This was an offshore lofting with temporary paralysis and a buddy saved him. Never heard of one like this before.

OMG, what make, model and size? I want one! That's some mighty pop!

Seriously though - sounds like that board really wanted to kill him. Glad it worked out well :thumb:

Wow, what a story!

Happy it worked all out!

Yes, crashing backwards is a tough one!
Can be soooo powerful.

Most powerful when the kite loops.

The people who want/use fast kites should always be aware of this risk.
I know why I use slow kites and don't kiteloop...

What a lucky break for Nick that his friend was there. Lends credence to always kiting with a buddy...

I'd be interested to know if Nick will kite again.

I had a similar fall once when I got turned around after a jump in 9m conditions. As I fell I pulled down on one side of the bar and the kitelooped pulling me backwards towards the beach. Probably flew 25 feet backward through the air and landed on the back of my neck. As I was flying through the air I had time to think about death, paralysis, my family. Stunned but mobile I turned around just in time for the kite to loop again and superman me forward. I hit the safety at this point and all was over.

I had a concussion that night and whiplash for a week. I did think about quitting the sport but decided I could learn from that. I became conservative and now I never turn my back to the kite. If I do get discombobulated I let go of the bar... Also I, no matter how much a pain it is, walk out far in the water to waterstart and stay in deep water...

So, was the board leashed to the kiter, and the kite still powered up and the board dragging the kiter under water, because the board was "fish-luring" or "tomb-stoneing"?

Or, maybe the board was leashed and the surf was pulling the board toward shore, and this caused the kiter to be dragged under water?

What kind of leash was used?

Wow, what a story. Couldn't imagine how that must have felt for Nick. Mentally saying goodbye to his family. <gulp>

So relieved to read the positive ending though. Gili is a hero! Somebody buy that man some beers. :thumb:

News reporters rarely make an effort to get all the details right. It sounds to me like they meant to say "kite" and not "kiteboard". I can't even begin to understand why they used the word "flick". Maybe that's an Australian thing because in American English you would never use it in that way. It would be nice to have a better explanation of what happened because the way it is written it's really hard to figure out.

Shitty day...glad he is ok. Kudos to the buddy. Somebody buy that man a Fosters.

As an aside, I love how screwed up the news usually is....it is amazing people know anything about anything with messed up information coming at them all the time.
