Kite deflates after crash and I can't find the reason.

Postby jats2k9 » Mon Nov 25, 2013 2:43 am

I crashed the kite leading edge straight into the water, have to admit that it crashed hard. I relaunch without any problems and after a couple of second I noticed the kite was losing air so I went back to shore. By the time I got to the beach it had gone almost flat. Well back on land, I pumped it up to see if I could find any holes or something, yet it sat on the sand for minutes rock solid.
Have you guys had anything like it happened to you?? or any idea what could have been?

Try bending the valves, sometimes a crack in the base will only leak under certain conditions. Failing that, try spraying soapy water on the kite.

Yes really good point. Bend the valves at the base and also inspect the stems and check each strut tube.

Was your main valve dislodged? What model kite? Some kites with screw on inflate valves can pop out if they are cross threaded or simply if the impact is hard enough. The material is soft enough to give way and to partially slide out. Happened to me on a Cabrinha once. When I got to shore the valve was super crooked but still mostly connected to the hole it screws into.

Wow I think thats it. Its an element 2 13m. The valve looks somehow like cabrinha valves. I think that's what happened, the threads on the valves slided out enough to lose the air.

Yeah check and see if they flattened out, you might want to get a new one way valve. The female portion seems like the ridges of the screw are denser material wise. The male part (the valve) ridges may have flattened if this is in fact what busted out. Might need some nylon tape in the mean time to secure it.

Is this some inside knowledge which has not been revealed by the op? Why would you hope he bought it used?

Its actually brand new and the second time I take it out. The first time I rode for less than 30 min.

I had this happen twice on my element11 after a good crash. What I found out is the inflate/deflate valve would crossthread after a crash. It was very hard to notice because everything else looked fine. After I saw this i started to screw the valve back on really tight so far last time was months ago it hasnt deflated on a crash but I assume it crossthreads easily because its such a large valve.
