Heathrow to Brazil. arrived with 3 bags. I board bag with directional and kites, 21kg, 1 surf board, 7.3kg, and one normal bag, 21kg.
was charged 259EUR for the surf board and board bag.
on my ticket it states "two bags allowed, 23kg each, so I new I was going to pay for 1 bag but hell no I was charged for two bags because the 2nd allowed bag had to be a standard size, and a surf board bag or kite bag are not standard luggage, or size.
I asked for clarification and it took the check in agent 15 min to find the small print in the baggage section on-line.
does TAP really expect us to look into the terms and conditions of their baggage policy. do we now need lawyers to check the fine print every time we travel?
why does TAP make it as difficult, confusing and why do they operate in this dishonest, unpleasant way way??????

Should have packed the boards in one back.
You had two times oversize, that's what they charged?
They just follow their orders...

Its a hard lesson learned. Make sure you book the flight option that gives you the correct baggage options.
I once flew to the French alps and back from nz with a mountain bike. Zero extra charge.
My buddy went with a different company and misread the fine print.... Cost him $1500 nzd!!!! Yikes.
Also if you have been miss-charged, claim it back after your holiday.
I was charged $200 usd at one point even though I was clearly within my baggage limit. Sent a claim through when I got back and got my $200 back.

All right, I'm going to share a secret with all my fellow kitesurfers here.
A secret I learned when I was working in the travel industry - TAP stands for take another plane.

Agreed
Flown with TAP a few times, never had issues because I pay for
one oversize and take
one over size.
Ram your kites and bars into your allocated hold luggage allowance.
Put your clothes in your hand luggage

I always take TAP to brazil from Germany.
Works fine, accept to pay and off I go.
Planes are fine, food is not the best.
There are way worse airlines if it comes to sports bags and overweight.
See Swiss and Lufthansa.
And Air Berlin if connected with Etihad...

Yea that happened to me on the way out but only got charged €130 on the way back. I packed the kiteboard in with the directional. Put my clothes in hand luggage and folded the kite bag in half so it was std size to check in.
I think the allowance was 2 x 32kg but u pay for each oversize bag regardless of weight. Works out quite good once u know cause then u can take 3x32kg for only €130.

There were a few topics on KF, I think even Toby was one of the Op's ,about TAP and their ridiculous baggage policy.

Have any of you had problems with theft or loosing your luggage whwn transferring planes in Brazil. I want to travel to Fortaleza from Toronto and I cannot find any direct flights so I will be stuck with a transfer in Sao Paulo or Brazilia. Also which of these airports is the better choice for transfer.
