800 to 1000 per hour? I dont think thats possible.
Typical estimate for jogging is just over 100 calories per mile.
At 800/hr, my usual 3 to 4 hour kite session (2-3 times per week) burns more calories than running a marathon? Then how come im so fat?

Im not sure about calories but I can confirm the increased heartrate over the session from my Garmin Virb. It was between 130 and 150 my whole session of recording.

I have absolutely no idea how many calories kitesurfing burns.
What I do know, is that I weigh myself every morning on body composition scales.
In the kitesurf season my weight goes down and my body fat ratio goes down, and my muscle ratio goes up.
In the off season I cycle a 50km round trip to work. My weight and body composition remains stable.

I suspect you burn a lot more calories in learning mode, when you are constantly fighting the kite and board, plus all the body dragging and self rescuing. Later on, when you get more economical and efficient with movement, much less activity.
I am same as OzBungy, get skinny in kite season, get fat in off season. Eat and drink the same in both seasons, can't sustain that intake with so much less exercise.
My wife appreciates the kiting season, also adding in the effect of learning to jump on actually having noticeable abs for first time in a lot of years.

I don't know, but after yesterdays's session, all of my muscles are stiff and sore and my energy levels are really low. I workout alot too, gym 3 times a week, swimming 3x45min per week, and running 15-20mi per week. So its unusual for me to get exhausted from anything. I am a noob though, so I wipe a lot, fight the kite and board alot, and Im the body dragging king!
So hopefully I am melting some blubber!

Ok, so let's say you're reeeeally slow and jogging a 10 minute mile, that's basically walking and comes to 600 calories burned in an hour. Why is 800 such a stretch from that, when're working muscles at the same time while kiting?

Eat Healthy and 6 times a day will be 10x more beneficial than counting calories burnt I think. Eat low fat, lot's of veggies and fruit. Have a banana or apple on the beach waiting for you, and eat every 2-3 hours, just a bit. Probably the best thing kiting does for your health is bring stress levels down, (Unless doing risky moves) 80% Diet 20% Exercise.
I can't see it burning more than 500-600 calories an hour and I can consume 1500 calories in about 10 minutes. I know many fat kiters who kite 5 days a week, so again boils down to what you stick in your pie hole.
Small meals keep carbs down to a minimum after 5, no cheese or grease. Booze is not so bad but it makes you crave crap food. I lost 10 KGs in 6 weeks being strict, but this was with jumping rope 18 min a day and doing home workout for 40 min. 7 days a week.

I would say that short of kiting waves w/o ever going off wave (to get a breather), theirs no way that kiting can burn more than bout 300 to 400 calories an hour.
I agree 100%.
I mountain bike all summer long in 80+ degrees for over two hours. I have a Wahoo Fitness ANT+ heartrate monitor running Sportypal Pro on my cell phone. After a two hour ride, (12+ miles) on advanced terrain, averaging 9 mph, I don't even have 1,500 calories burned. I am pretty well fried afterward. Kiting does kick your ass, but it's a different, un-cardio type workout in my opinion. My muscles are more sore after kiting than MTB.
Who knows for sure? I've asked Sporty Pal support to write a profile for kiting........not sure that's plausible with so many variables.

I too mountain bike and kite. Mountain biking sure as hell kicks kitings arse for a hard workout.
But I can and do kite for many hours more than I do mountain biking. So my gut feeling is that overall I'm using more energy kiting.
A powered and aggressive session can consume quite a lot of energy. An underpowered light wind session. not much at all.
