Warm and very windy at Puerto Rico

Postby detourpr » Mon Jan 06, 2014 2:51 pm

Looking for warm and windy caribbean weather? It's been blowing 16-20 knots at Isla Verde / San Juan and 18-25 knots at La Parguera (flat water) every day for the past 3 weeks. And the water is 80 degrees. No need for a wetsuit of any kind. Forecast for the next days stays the same. It's 9am over here and there's already whitecaps all over the place at Isla Verde. Nice waves too. I'm sure that Shacks at Isabela must be awesome.

I don't own a shop so I don't make any $ from your visit, but just wanted to let you all know there's a lot of fun waiting for you over here. If you want to escape from the cold, this is a sweet short trip from the states, no passport needed.

Don't hesitate in contacting me for any info.

RJ

Hi Toby!

Wind season usually starts in February, with March and April being the best months. Will stays till July. Raining season starts in August and in October (surfers correct me if I'm wrong) starts the surfing season. However, for the most recent years everything's being changing. In 2010 we had an incredibly windy October. I don't recall a December as good as the one we just had, and a perfect January like this. It used to be just a few days, like a preview of what's coming.

We had 16+ knots yesterday all day and night at the San Juan area. Folks at Parguera (south) called to say it was 25 knots solid.

When are you visiting?

I think a 12m is all you will need, maybe also a 10m if you weigh less than me.
definitely not a 17m nor an 8m unless you are 125#'s
Winds are usually steady Unless a storm is rolling thru which goes by quick.
wind peaks around 2pm

25 solid would be average?

I need 15-25 with 25 max gusts ;-)

More like 20 solid at most. Gusting to 25 in the quick moving rainstorms.

it is totally sideshore early in the season and turns a little more sideon shore as the season progresses.

choppy and waves on the outside except maybe in summer

Toby,
For 25 average you gotta go south (90 minutes drive from San Juan) to Pozuelos Beach in the town of Guayama. A GPS will take you right there. Super windy but not much to do there. Other option is 2 hours from San Juan at La Parguera. That is kite heaven.

San Are has been 17-20 knots lately with higher gusts.

darippah - I have learned that is better to carry more than less. I am 155 pounds and have been using my Ozone 13m and 10m lately in Isla Verde. If had gone south I would have definitely needed an 8m this week. 14meter is a very common size in the rest of the season, with me using a 15 and others up to 17m. We haven't needed such big sizes lately, but who knows. It might be cheaper to rent a big kite here if you ever need it than to carry it around.

If I were to carry two kites and stay only in the San Juan area, I would carry 10m and 12m. I I were going south, 8m and 12m.
