Drone Kitewave Filming

Postby TurcoLoco » Mon Dec 02, 2013 10:21 pm

I wonder if it has been done, what model to use, difficulties, and costs...
If Amazon can do it, I am shure we will soon see a lot of them.

I've been flying a DJI Phantom for aerial gopro footage recently and can comment on a few of the difficulties.

1. Wind
As a kiter you want as much wind as possible, but to a drone, wind is the worst enemy for getting stable footage. The phantom can be switched into GPS mode so it will try to hold its position when the wind blows it, but it does this by tilting, which unfortunately also tilts the video. Even without the self-correction, the wind plus the general jitteriness from the props won't give you very clean video without some expensive gimbal or other stabilization (that costs more than the phantom does).

2. Battery life!
Even on top end drones, these things suck up a ton of juice. Flight times are up to about a half hour at most

3. Getting the right angle
When the drone is close by, you can see what you're shooting. If you're shooting real estate photos, you sorta want flyovers. When shooting kiting, you want to keep the kiter in the frame, which can be very difficult to judge unless you have a 2nd camera with a live feed back to whoever is at the controls. This is also quite expensive.

It's a great idea, and you can get a couple shots but in general I would see it being very difficult for kiting, especially over the water where you can't do any kind of emergency landing. Maybe in the future as battery life and accessories come down in price, but right now unless you're willing to sell all your kites it would be a very expensive undertaking :D

I was thinking maybe a better solution is something with wings, like a predator aircraft, something with a variable geometry wing that could fly in 15 to 25 knots, some radio contact between you and the câmera, like that one which follows surfers from the beach...

How about having your Amazon orders shipped by drone in 30 minutes ? Perhaps a good idea for spare kite parts
