Here is a little project i've been working on for a while and finally it is in pretty good shape.

It uses a x-io IMU orientation data to post process video for level horizon imagery. The IMU fits in the large backdoor for a gopro so it closes up and is waterproof.

Some kite and strut mounted videos coming soon, but this one from my backyard shows the basic idea.

and best of all no more manual entering rotation angles in video processing software to straighten out videos..that was really time consuming..required many beers and late nights

Impressive work, surprised Gopro hasn't already made something like this.

That is awesome... are you planning on releasing a schematic and parts list? I would certainly like to dig out my old soldering iron and some bread board.

Well it's not really a breadboard project. The IMU sensors can bought fully assembled and ready to go. The x-io one i'm using is nice but expensive ~ 400$ . There are less expensive ones out there, but I haven't tried or tested them yet.

The post processing software is a bit involved and right now I'm doing all the processing in MATLAB so a bit tricky to export

Love it! I was just thinking about a brushless gimbal to unspin kite mounted video, but this is way simpler mechanically.

Well here is the first try in the water. Not perfect, the horiz is often 10 degrees off and sometimes more. Still way better the raw footage. Will try to figure out if it is the sensor or my algorithm causing the issue with some horizon based tracking I wrote a few years ago.

Not a great day..light wind and tiny waves, and freezing ~ 33 deg f... brrrr..wouldn't have gone out if not for testing my new toy! I tried to fly the kite aggressively to give the IMU a good challenge, and simulate real wave kiting:
