How fast can you rig a kite ?

Postby Peter_Frank » Wed Dec 04, 2013 9:54 pm

Hi

We have discussed this locally, as it is not easy to be as fast as windsurfers.

But HOW fast can you rig a LEI kite ?

If you leave the lines on, you will save time (when it goes right).

But as most dont, maybe we should have two "contests" - one when you rig with lines attached, and one where you have to attatch the lines.

The same question could go for packing down - HOW fast can you pack a kite and bar down, and in the bag ?

To be fair, I think we should talk about medium kitesizes, that is around 8-10m2 sizes, and not smaller nor bigger.

My guess is, it will be just under 2 minutes when lines left attached, and just over 2:30 when lines are mounted.

Not in average, but for the REALLY fast ones

For derigging I think it will be somewhat over 1 minute, up to 2 minutes (till the kite is deflated, lines rolled up, and kite + bar in the bag and closed), for the fast ones.

Mostly theory and some experience, but lets see what you guys and girls can do ?

Video required of course, but easy to make if you think you are fast

For comparison, the Danish Windsurfer Kenneth is quite fast:

Interesting to see how fast LEI kites in the medium sizes 8-10m2 can be rigged up and down ?

Lets see your "records", no matter if fast or slow :thumb:

Ha haa, yep :thumb:

Still, even with a foil, you have to pack the kite out of the bag, and wind the lines out, which will take at least half a minute alone

I have never timed it fully myself (a standard LEI rigging and derigging, when fast), so could be interesting to see some real life timings :naughty:

Not that it matters - simply out of curiosity

To me it's not the set up time that is annoying, I usually do it in 5 minutes or less, but with adrenaline pumping you don't really notice it ;)

It's when you have to roll the kite up, spending time to wipe all the damn sand off of it, getting all the air out, etc. Screw that!

with my scoprega pump i can unwind my lines while the kite fully inflates. if i was really going for it i would imagine i could be on the water in 5 minutes

I can blow up my 13m Fuel in less than a minute with my my on-board air compressor. Could be faster if I adjusted the regulator. I don't rush my lines how ever and I all ways double check them. So I don't really feel like doing this test.

Like Dyyylan I hate packing away. It takes far more time for me to pack down than it takes to get on the water.

A related question...let's say you're at work, and it is windy midday, and you can sneak away for a quick kite session....how much time do you need to make it worthwhile?

For me, 2 hours minimum: that's includes 12 minute drive each way, plus putting on wetsuit and booties, kite setup, etc. That gets me probably 45mins on the water. I figure maybe 10min setup, 5min pack down. You guys are fast! Must be powerful pumpers. :thumb:
