Freerace 2011 is twin fin that needs a good level of experience to get the best out of it
That board is quite loose ...and needs a precise amount of edging when riding

It is not a wide board at 18.62 inches
That is why it is not very efficient at staying on a plane in the lulls
Not recommended for entry level

I did own that model board for one year and rode a lot with it in light winds (@80 sessions)
The Nugget 2013 just blows away that Freerace when it comes to performance in LW at any level

The Liquid Force Kitefish is a great directional to learn on and only costs $350 new. Still, I think it would be easier to learn on a twin tip.

From what I gather you are a future happy CWB Tsunami owner;) It's outside of your scope but well covers all of your bases and is shorter so cheaper to carry and at $300 on Amazon with Prime you will be as happy as a pig in shit! It's technicaly a directional/skimboard hybrid but the characteristics of it are what realy counts. As a skim it's a way better light wind board than any directional and because of the three(removable) back fins it will be a blast in small waves. If you can find a flat spot, you can practice small jumps and spins. In light wind you can even unhook and spin yourself dizzy. Good luck!

Hey everyone,

I'll be taking lessons in January on Sanibel Island. I'm putting together a quiver of gear that me, my dad, and my girlfriend can all progress on after our lessons. I'm trying to strike a balance between gear that would be usable for my dad and gf on this two week trip, with gear that I will want for myself in the future.

that be said, then so should You and your girlfriend.

I'd get a nice stable Wide but short directional for your dad ; then
when the wind is on the Light-side ----> you & the girlfriend can use it.
You could even bolt down a 60cm race-fin to it & go up-wind like hell
in almost no wind at Your weight !!
Other-wise, everyone is on a TT of there own size & choosing.

I started Kiting almost 9 years ago now, and I dedicated an entire year to learn
to ride a directional on a F-n Lake. The Only Bummer is that i should-a learned that thing
right from the start, instead of a year ago, -- ((because it's SO0oo fricken Fun)) -- !!!

Please listen to the guys saying to keep away from boards that are crossover race, hybrids, etc. that use longer and straight fins. They are much harder to ride when learning.

They require different riding technique and due to the fins need to be ridden flatter than other directionals. Longer fins require wider boards and you have to ride them on the edge of the board to handle the fins. Sectors and others are good boards, but I'd stick to a wider surf style board like the north Nugget, Slingshot Space Pickle or Slingshot Dialer.

I'm a Slingshot dealer and the easiest board to ride by far is the Space Pickle. Super easy to transition compared to most and easy to ride strapless.

Plug...I only have one Space Pickle left and would sell at 15% off before year end if interested. If too expensive, look for a Dialer or similar board.

this appears to be a LF kite fish, although it says its just a regular fish. But $190 seems like a steal. now don't all go buy one and clear them out before i can make a decision ...
