Foils for surfing? Have you ever touched a foil? Didn't think so. Yes I do ride foils surfing.

How does that work out when you drop your foil kite in front of a wave? I picture you on a 20 m foil and little twin tip with a seat harness mowing the lawn thinking you are wave riding but really just getting in everyone's way.

From the kiting portion of the Guincho video posted by ESG. Looks like a bridled kite, always hooked in, and strapless. All of this is backside. I think this is some amazing stuff. Others may not.

Going vertical on a huge cutback (just surfing on this one; no kite)
Round House Cutback 147.jpg
Here is a kite surfing sequence. The time in the video is included in the file name.
Half the board is buried and he is almost horizontal to the water.
Bottom Turn 1 313.jpg
Now he is vertical in the pocket.
Vert 2 314.jpg
Now he goes into a tail slide.
Tail Slide 3 315.jpg
I love this stuff. With a kite, he is staying in the area where the most energy is in the wave. I'm all for backside....frontside and switch too....it's all good. :-?

All I see is how much better style and more fun that kiter would be having if he faced the wave.

You need to open your mind, my friend.
Consider Slater's dominance at pipe.
Maybe 10% of his waves there are frontside, none that I have ever seen were switch.
But he consistently wins year after year. And he's old enough to be your dad.
I feel a little lame bringing it back to talking about surf idols, that's kinda weak anyway, but that is the kind of thread this is, weak sauce, discussing the style merits of technique.
Bringing it down to the level of figure skating on the ocean. :baby:
But anyway, another Slater anecdote for you to learn from.
I saw Slater score a 10 on a tube ride, backside, in crummy 3 footish CA waves a year or two ago, where he actually laid down on the board to make it through a little collapsing section, and stood up again to come out of the tube.
Now that didn't even look cool in the usual way and it wasn't a great wave to say the least.
But no way you could argue he did anything wrong on it.
I mean you could, you'd be pissing into the wind though.
I doubt any other human would have made more of the opportunity that wave presented.
Silly as contest surfing is, watching that heat was a lesson.
By the way, his opponent in the heat if I recall did not score a wave at all.
Maybe he was waiting for a right.
Maybe he should have ridden switch.
No, it wouldn't have mattered.
Another thing to learn from, I heard a quote, of whom I don't know, repeated by a musician:
"Once the music enters your head, it is already compromised"
So don't even sweat the details of stance or technique, unhooking or foils, fish or shortboards.
It will only hold you back.
Like that gopro on your back, it's just a distraction.

BTW get off my wave maggot!

Riding pipe is mostly just drop in get barreled end of ride. Plus it is different riding backside without a kite.

Kelly slater sucks at kiting.

I saw him one time getting interviewed on a pbs type channel and he sounded like Nancy Reagan talking about how nobody who uses herb has ever been a success in life. f*** that clown. :nono:

Couldn't find the video of Bob Marley riding waves yet ; what page was
that on , because i wanna see it ?

I really use to enjoy surfing ; 20 years almost every day, in Southern Cali.
When i lived with the life-guards on the beach-front in Carlsbad, they made
learn to ride a Longboard as well as the short ; it was like a totally different
sport !!!

I Never liked backside riding , but now that i can ride a surfboard with a kite , I'm
thinking i shoulda learned switch-foot when i surfed ; it seams Easy with a kite, or
is there not a comparison there ?

No feet , No-more surfing for me now ! :(

Yes you should be learning switch if you kite with a surfboard. If you didn't like riding backside on a surfboard you wouldn't like it at all kiting waves.

Why don't more kiters learn to ride switch?
Your first post is incomplete
You forgot .................Writing left handed looks like s**t
Why don't more left handers learn to write switch ?

How do you practice your switch wave riding ?
Do you alternate left hand right hand when wiping your backside s**t to become symmetrical ?

Are you so special....that you have 2 dominant eyes ?
