replacing lines before they break?

Postby AGK » Sat Jan 25, 2014 6:23 pm

I'm interested in peoples' opinions and experience on when you should replace flying lines. My bar has ~90 sessions on it and there are a few places on the front lines with some minor fraying. Is it best to a) not worry about it till they either break or start looking really bad b) replace them as soon as there is even a hint of fraying c) some specific thing to look for that is a good signal on when to replace lines? They aren't cheap, but a broken line while flying is a hassle at best and dangerous at worst.

Thanks for any help.

I would replace a front line sooner than a steering line - especially if it is your flagout line. More willing to take the risk of having to self recue versus having to let the kite go completely if flagout line breaks

A quick search on Making Q power line sets , will yield a tun of info for
building your own line sets at a reduced cost. It isn't very difficult.

Search : Making Q power line sets, (in the lower Left corner of this page)

Your Thread title, kinda says it All, as to Why you would want to replace them !!!

Once you are seeing fraying it's a good time to replace them, they go from having small frays to big ones fairly quick. Plus, it just feels great to have confidence in your gear when the conditions are ramped up.

It happened actually yesterday to someone kiting in our spot. The back line broke and the kite started looping. luckily the guy pulled the quick release fast enough. I would recommend replacing not just the effected line but all of them after a while. It is actually easy to do it yourself and just makes the "operation" safer ;)
