There is some detailed information on attack deaths at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fa ... ted_States
The 2 most recent ones on Maui happened only three and a half months apart and both off Makena area. I think prior to these two, the last one was about 10 years ago, surfer, North of Kanapali, and considered rare at the time.
There also was the two kitesurfer incidents recently, one just going after a board and the other bite on a rider's leg.

I don't believe that there is an increase in shark attacks statistically, if you go look at the numbers.
There have been years (80-90 years ago the big year that inspired the jaws movie) that match the number we have had the last few years....the numbers go up and down.
I'm all for people not being killed, but this is where these animals live, what do we expect from them?
Tourism and a persons personal recreational pleasure are not good enough reasons to take any action against an animal, or a species.

I think they are up in Hawaii according to this article
http://articles.latimes.com/2013/dec/03 ... k-20131203
With population growth and there are more people in the water, the counts should increase, and there can be normal variation with higher years, but this may be more than that.
People die and others want to understand why to try and prevent more deaths.

It is way to early to say there is increase. Like Old is saying...there have been spikes before. This might be an anomaly..or not regardless hunting and killing sharks because a few people afraid is not a good enough reason. Sharks have an incredibly important role to play in ocean ecosystems.
I don't really know what OP wants with this thread since he doesn't state it. To me it looks like random links vaguely related to sharks.

There was a shark right under me today,... but the good thing was that I did not see it.
Happens everytime I go out kiting in the ocean for some reason.

population growth , hawaii:
1980 .. 968,500
1990 .. 1,113,491
2000 .. 1,213,519
2010 .. 1,363,621
by 2015 .. 1,418,300
by 2040 .. 1,708,900
from hawaii.gov
but by 2040 there will be no sharks left, or tuna or clean water to play in, so no worries then.
