This could explain why there is an Unprecedented Spike in Shark attacks in Maui.

so, what's the issue here?
You want to control the shark population?
How about controlling the human impact on nature?
Also, regarding kiting, and this being a kite forum,.. what are we talking about here?

We are, as soon as we lose our board, the biggest fishing lure ever, so why act surprised?

Sharks coming closer to shore following boats,.... due to shark tours and their baiting. = human impact

oh oh, this might have started something else

happy kiting, y'all

There might be better reporting of attacks now than in the past, so there may not have been an increase. But 2 deaths in 4 months when in the past Maui had a much lower frequency, maybe one death every 5 to 10 years should be cause for further investigation, and they have started a 2 year study.

No one knows the cause, or the solution, so no reason to jump to the conclusion that they want to kill all the sharks as the answer.

A Maui kiter was bit and a Maui kite student's board was bitten, so this is a relevant topic even though some may prefer that it not be discussed.

Yes sharks are in the water, that is where they live. If that is a problem then one should take up another hobby like 'beach sitting'. Of course no where is really safe from sharks anymore as we learned from Sharknado.

they have nets where i live now, and baited hooks next to them for catching large predators, no one has been eaten for a very long time - and yet 35 mins south quite a few people have been eaten in the last year or 2 :-( and there are way less people there on water - could be by chance...? who knows.

gps tracking is pretty cool

i am not sure about the shark culling on hooks but I know one thing, it is sooo insignificant to what goes on out in the oceans, the oceans are literally raped, the Lafayette (factory fish processing ship) for example can hold the entire yearly quota of New Zealand fish (so it is sustainable) in one outing - that is..... sick. They catch shark, dolphins - everything and chuck in back in dead where no one can see...

Since this is a kitesurf forum, does anybody have any details on the kitesurf incidents that have happened in the past? I've always wondered if a shark could keep up and knock me off my board while riding, and whether this has happened before... Body dragging of course makes you an obvious target...
