Oh no another Epic Infinity V3 review!

Postby soul19 » Wed Apr 02, 2014 6:21 am

Let me start off with the particulars that seems to be relevant to some people.... I am not a Rep, Team rider or whatever else is of importance in having a jaded opinion. I am a consumer who buys what he rides and has no obligations to make anything look better than what it is! Now with that nasty business out of the way lets get into what this Canadian male is registering at... Roughly 6'1", 195-200lbs, average kiting abilities (but rapidly improving) and exceptionally good looking (okay one is a lie but I will let you figure which one that is :thumb: )! I was fortunate enough to have Dimitri willing to send down his own Infinity v3 for me to demo and see what all this LW kiting is all about. I am not a LW specialist and I much rather be lit on a smaller kite than sailing along on a sluggish monster. I prefer lively kites that like input and if the kite is park and ride than it is not for me! I currently own a 3G screamer 10m Ltd (my personnel favourite kite), a 3G Judge 8m (another great kite), various North and Ozone kites to fill out the quiver. All in all, I own too many kites and need to reduce them down as too many overlap.

The first thing that I noticed as I had the kite on the ice was that this thing is freaking huge! The model that I used has the large inflation system, one that Dimitri is prototyping at the time (now available on the surf kite), and made pumping up the kite about the same as pumping up my smaller kites. I could not imagine using the regular 9mm valve to pump up this kite and would be a area of contention for me. Fit and finish of this kite is very nice and it just looks sharp in the sky. Many people who watched me ride this kite, all commented about what a nice looking kite it was. Construction is top notch and I was initially impressed right from the start. Love or hate this brand, there is no arguing that they are some of the nicer looking kites on the market.
For being such a large kite, I was shocked that the kite wasn't the sluggish beast that I initially thought it was going to be. Steering was much better than I though would be possible and it rewards an active flying style of riding. Yes this thing will park but it really comes into its own when you give it steady input. Upwind was easy but does require that you weight the back heel and give it some good ole fashioned edge. I had this kite out on the snow in lulls of 3-5knots and as high as 20. It really comes into its own from 7-12knots and at its upper range is can get too powerful to ride (but why ride a kite that big when a 12-14m kite would be a better choice).
Now I am far from a great jumper but this kite jumps well! I have come to appreciate the high boosting jumps that I see other kiters doing and it has put a desire to get it dialed in. Now this kite will not have the massive hang time that the Screamers are known for but it can still get you up there. What really shines about this kite is its freestyle capabilities. This is the kite to get if you want to learn some new tricks and do it in manageable winds. Yeah you can mow the lawn in some light winds but this kite wants to do so much more. I don't have a desire to kite in the lightest winds possible and would be happier doing something else. What I do want is a kite that will work well in the 8-10 knot range and increase the amount of days that I am on the water.

The new bar with the long awaited QR is a nice set up. I have been using the older system (which I have had no issues with at all) and really see the overall improvements that Epic has made. The QR is mindless to use and very simple to reassemble. I have longer arms so the power/depower straps are nicely in reach and once set, stay put. The foam on the bar is soft on the hands but I can see how it will show signs of wear if you don't heed some care with it. My only real complaint to the overall bar comes down to the colour...White is nice but doesn't stay pretty for long. My older black Epic bar appears to look newer than the 4G bar.

The real money of any kite review comes down to how this kite actually performs... this is a powerful performance kite. Yes it will get you out in Sub 10 knots but so will the other LW kites that are on the market. What this kite does so well is it enables us weekend, family committed, work abused kiters to get out and be able to pretend that we could one day be better than what we are. Is it the best LW kite on the market for getting out in the lowest of winds possible ....NOPE! If you are looking to mow the lawn in a snails fart than buy a huge foil. If you are looking for a kite that will allow you to be progressive and learn while the wind is light, than this is your beast!

James

I liked this kite so much that I went out and bought one. Just the amount of days that this kite will open up to ride in is well worth the money that I spent. I am grateful to Dimitri and Helen for allowing me to demo this kite and for the excellent customer service.

James,
With all due respect - you're really pushing it with mr.D's arse-kissing. I don't know what's the deal with you and Epic and I don't really care to know - it's just getting annoying. Dimitri should find some other ways of laundering his reputation. Doing what his says instead of telling everybody happy stories about what he's supposedly doing - is always a good start.

Which being said, I'm really happy you're enjoying the kite - but at the same time I can't help feeling sorry for you if you've actually paid the full retail price for that kite without working out some kind of a deal with mr.D for posting all these "happy" reviews. Just try to remember the conclusion to which you came your-self after buying that used 10LTD - Epic kites are gems... if purchased used!!! The resale value is worse than that of KIA cars 10 years ago - loosing half of its original price tag 2 steps past the dealership gate. And to boot, Epic kites come with the worst warranty on the market. It doesn't matter what mr.D and his friends claim around here - in real life anybody contacting Epic with warranty issues outside of the 3-months period at best will be offered some replacement parts "at a discount" with shipping costing 10 times as much as the actual part costs to purchase (not even to produce) in China. At worst - you'll just get blown off like in good-old Eclipse days. And the fact that we live in an area where having some decent wind once a week is a freaking miracle - well let's just say that this joke of Epic's warranty runs out fast around here, basically it's totally useless unless you'll run into some kind of issues right out of the bag.

So to sum it up - your inexplicable affection for mr.D's arse aside - you shouldn't have bought an Epic kite before trying some other brands. For the same price there are way better deals out there. But you've got owned by that sneaky Epic's way of selling - enjoy it now! And please - try keeping your happy hysteria into existing Epic threads.

Cheers!

Nice review James, but at this point, I think most people are over the single kite review. What we need now is direct comparisons. Same day, same rider, same board and VIDEO (of the kite actually pulling a rider). The closest we have seen to this the Dimitri on the V3 and SUP and Damien Leroy on the Velocity and race board. That was 2 separate videos, each made to push a point of view. How great would it have been to see those two guys trading equipment and showing what they could do.

To all my fellow lightwind geeks out there, I challenge you to seek out some of the other lightwind kites and get some real comparisons with no brand affiliations or shops involved. My guess is we will find that the shot group is fairly tight with the newest generation of LW kites and it will all be about subtle preferences.

Anyway, my big blue beast is available for a try anytime.

Nice review

@alexeyga you are very boring don't join a thread if you just want to bash.

If you don't get much wind in your spot and all you bring to the table is hate please try something else.

@KYLakekiter I fully agree, it would be good to get a video of all the light wind monsters. Supa must know a lot of guys who surf in light winds and they must have a selection of differnet branded kites. Is this something we could set up as a forum?

Or we can face the facts that the differences aren't worth arguing or gushing over :baby:

Fair enough. For the record, I did refer to myself as a lightwind geek which should explain why I cared to opine.

Alexeyga,

For a man that has issues with anyone liking any Epic product, you seem to chase Dimitri all over this forum! I would still stick to that original statement that you are sporting a nice big man crush. It now appears that I have garnered some of your affection, while I am flattered, is getting rather creepy. Anyways, since it appears that you have a vested interest in what I write about, how about you provide me with an acceptable list of kites that I can be excited about!
Thanks Champ!

Hey KYLakeKiter,

I kinda agree with the aspect that it would be beneficial to have a wider comparison but here is my problem.... I have contacted other companies to see about arranging demos but to no avail! I get kites offered at a reduced rate but that is a huge amount of coin to hand out to do some comparison testing. In all honesty, what I like and don't like about any kite is irrelevant to anyone outside of me! All that I can comment about is what I find on any model and it could be world's apart from someone else. Every opinion is jaded to the tastes of that individual but still provides some insight to the handling of these kites. You can provide the most detailed side by side comparisons of all the LW kites on the market but it still comes down to individual tastes. If one kite gets that magical nod that it is the superior wing for LW kiting but you hate the way it flies, it just isn't right! My review isn't based on what is best overall but rather what I felt about that particular product in general. I am very happy with my purchase and find it quite amusing that it can cause such an offense to some people (not you but others).

James,

I feel ya man. When you drop the coin, and you are happy, that's a success story any way you spin it. :thumb:
