knee brace for osteoarthritis

Postby clydesdale » Tue Jan 28, 2014 5:31 pm

had meniscus surgery about 6-7yrs ago from kiting accident, now same knee is fubar w/ osteoarthritis. can only put about 60-70% of leg pressure on that knee when kiting and have to baby it especially on jumps and in chop.

ligaments are fine so am looking at osteoarthritis specific knee braces. anyone have any experience with them or use one?

I'm currently kiteboarding with one of the Bledsoe brand, they're good help to relieve very similar pain you're dealing with. Have them measure your knee/leg to proper fitting. Worth the expense, they're not cheap. :thumb:

I have the same problem from an old basketball injury. Sometimes its pretty good and other times it is sore. When its sore I can only give it 60-70%. The pain impulse shuts down the muscle and says "oh no you don't". I try to keep the leg strong, but too much exercise aggravates the joint. My ligaments are fine too. I wonder if a brace would help me as well even though for me its not really a stability issue.

I wear an ACL brace for stability reasons. It makes the world of difference for me. Before the brace after a long kite session I had a lot of pain the day after. Now it's literally like I have a new knee. No more severe pain after the session.

I was fitted for a custom brace though which also makes a big difference. I tried an off the shelf brand and it did not fit. Custom fitting is the way to go.

So a brace increases stability, but how can it enlighten osteoarthirits problems?

Good one! Might be worth it, but will look like the bionic man with two knees with the same problem: inner meniscus cut, cartilage heavily damaged on the inside :o

Is anyone successfully using stem cell therapy to regrow and repair knee cartilage yet?

This has to be coming at some point.

They're actually doing stem cell injections into the knee, saw this a few days ago.

I always wondered how you get selected to be tested on with all this new stuff.
