Max speed on a TT?

Postby GTC » Thu May 29, 2014 12:11 am

Hi all!
Few days ago I used my running gps watch on a kiting session (inside a plastic bag under the wetsuit). I was riding a 132x42 TT and a 10m Switch Nitro in 20-25 knots. It was quite choppy so riding at high speed was very uncomfortable. The max speed I achieved was 24.2 knots in a flat zone near the shore. I'm guessing what's the maximum speed you've achieved riding a twintip board.
I know this is a joke for racing boards and hydrofoils :jump: :jump:

I clocked 33.0 knots on a TT 155x45 door, 21-22 knots wind, 16 m Havoc, very shallow water (6 inches of water, mushy soft bottom). Absolutely no chop, at most tiny ripples. Garmin GPS in pocket.

I'm pretty sure others go into the low 40 knot range in similar conditions on better equipment.

What made it possible is I had complete liberty to pick my angle downwind for optimal speed. It was during low tide in the Florida keys where the shallow flats go on in all directions for long distances.

Never been clocked in flat water. Have hit 35 ish mph in chop beside a jetski.

Did manage 44 knots gps, fast snow conditions with an 8m. Felt pretty fast on a noodly snowboard with plenty of side cut.

Think I generally ride between 15 and 25 mph for most freeriding, and less on a surfboard.... not very fast.

I've done 49 knots on a big, modified cafeteria tray, riding parallel to an airstrip. If I had fins on the tray, I probably could have done 65 knots.

just guessing, i would say i can hit about 25 knots pretty easily powered on a 9m and a wakestyle board with boots. the boots definitely help you hold down a lot more power so you can just blast away over the chop at light speed and not have to worry about your ankles. unless you fall.

dont think ive gone any faster than that though, chop is just too much here

Had a winter session on a warm day but with water in the high 30's F, 20 knots in gusts, 13m kite, in a marsh/creek spot, half of which was a foot deep if that. Could really feel the acceleration when getting into the shallow part.
Mirror-flat, cold, shallow water is like ball bearings, "liquid ice" as Tilmann Heinig calls it, it's no joke. Almost ran out of room to slow down on a couple of runs.
The speed?
Oh I couldn't measure it but was WAY faster than the usual "20 knots" paced against boats or autos, had to be... 30? Not that fast, really, on a wide board with 50mm rocker...
Inspired me to build something faster, and get a GPS app.
