Sydney Australia Wind Conditions

Postby celly » Wed Jun 11, 2014 8:50 pm

Going to be moving to Sydney on a working holiday visa for about a year. I plan on kiting while im there but don't want to be lugging around my board as I will likely be transient. I planned on packing my 14m and then buying a board once im there/know where I will be staying. My question is will I get much use out of a 14m in this area? Also kite is brand new so i can pack it tight enough into my checked luggage for the flight. Has anyone run into any problems with this?

Use my 17m all the time in Sydney.. Theres lots of light days in Sydney thst a big kite and board will get you out when everyones still on the beach.. Normal seabreezes are around 20knots so pack for those too as they are 3 or 4 days a week over summer

Unless you want to spend an hour in traffic 3- 4 days a week you will now need to research the best place to live and work.
A car will be needed to maximise you weekday kiting time

Sydney is a pretty good place to kite. Winds are ok in summer, but mostly offshore in winter, so you need to be creative with beach selection in the winter. I live on the northern beaches, love it, but the best winds are south Sydney, such as Botany Bay, which also benefits from flat'ish water. I just keep an extra large kite to save the 1 hr drive south. Water is warm year round, 18-24C.

Good to know! I'm liking the looks of the Cronulla area.... Anyone from around there?

Cronulla is great for waves when it's on, check out Wanda beach area. Other than that i found botany bay was the only option other than Dee Why on the rare occasion. I lived in Sydney for two years and gotta say its not great for wind, rarely used 10m or less but for a city + sun + kitesurfing destination there's worse....
