For me most of chicken loop are terrible. It's just too big. I just finished this one, half size of the new ozone, lighter. Tomorrow I will test it on the waves. The idea is to have massive power/depower. I used a cabrinha leash and made some mods.
I wanted to share also my setup. I use BRM style safety setup combined with Wichard. Wichard I chose because I think it will handle wear far better than BRM style QR.
Wichard is connected to my Jay harness and all kitebars have BRM style safety with it. I bought from local marine shop nylon balls and swaged eyes to create BRM style safetys.
Depower setup I have copied from Kiss loop system / sonic race mixer tuning. I was also thinking this kiss setup but I decided I want to have normal front line safety also.
Nice bar. I do not understand why you would opt for this depower setup. You must kite in an area that doesn't have frequent fluctuations in windspeed in the range of 5 knots up and down... Of course you could handle that with bar throw, but that is IMHO not the preferred option with respect to your body position during kiting. (Depending on sheeting range of your kites).
How did you make (reinforce) the hole in the carbon bar? Nice build.
Trimless set up is by far my preference for foiling with LEI's. The BRM set up has a number of trim options on the harness side of the set up that I only really use with my biggest kite (12m) ie when I know I'm likely to be in the top of its range, I slip one larks head onto a knot to bring the bar closer. My next kite down is a 8.5 and with that or anything smaller, the kites full usable range is well within reach without the need to adjust. If its truly too windy for those kites, no amount of trim is going to fix it and you really need to come in to rig down. The 8.5 has a huge range on foil.
The same set up works pretty well for surfboards because I'm only on the 8.5 or smaller but I have normal bars for the really gusty days. For TT where you can edge out the power, I would never opt for a trimless set up.
I only use trim when I launch the kite and if it is very gusty when I return to the shore. We have very gusty winds.
The whole idea of this setup is to get as large bar throw as possible. My bar is about 15cm from my hip to 1m. With regular setup bar is maybe 30cm to 1m. So you have the same depower range as with normal kite but you don't need to use trim.
These bars I made buying cheap chinese carbon tubes. Biggest one is 22ID, 25OD and 60cm wide. In the center there is reinforcement about 15-20cm. All the way to 15mm. So the carbon is 1cm thick around the whole. Just glued those tubes together with good epoxy. Waited few days and then drilled the holes.
I am making now second batch of those bars. This time I will use the same carbon tube 22x25. I will put 20cm reinforcement 20x22 in the middle. Then I will put 20mm nylon plastic bar in the middle and drill the hole.
Maybe dumb question, but Any tips on getting epoxy applied well and evenly between two tubes slid together? If the tube is long and the fit is tight, how do you get that reinforcement piece glued well in the middle without losing too much epoxy on the slide in?
About applying epoxy. You can apply the epoxy on the center of the carbon bar with long stick. You use carbon tube or something else right size to push the nylon bar in the middle. After you have pushed the rod to the middle you use alcohol (96%) and paper to clean all the epoxy that got stuck in the road. Same when pushing the smaller carbon tube inside the bigger one. How to get centered? I marked the proper spot with tape to the bar I used to push the center piece to the middle. Remember. These bars are exatly the right size. So getting contact is very, very easy. You can also use laminating epoxy because of the close contact of the pieces.
