A review of the Shinnster from this source

that was me that bought the last one!
I have used it three times this week in fairly typical solent , short frequency chop and it is a revelation.
efficient
- it will go very early if you get forward on it a bit, getting a bit forward and engageing the whole rail also makes it stomp up wind.
comfortable
- the flex is eye opening in that it smoothes out harsh chop but does not sap power from the kite or wallow.
loooooooooooooooose
- coming off a surfboard it is a bit of a wake-up-call initially as it is not as "secure" as a surfboard and if allowed to come off its rail it will slide out spectacularly, get it right though through a turn and the board can be hooked around a turn quite unlike anything else I have ridden and still hold speed.
I am loving this board so far, I have been a surfboard only rider for the last few months but this has caused a bit of a rethink. I think this can be ridden by directional riders or avid twintippers to equally good effect.
the best £380 I have spent on equipment........

Pictures to show my own design of deckpads, cut from 3 large square pads, it took me about 2 hours and a bit of a mess, but worth it I think :D

Thomas's review of the Shinnster.

The reviews seem very consistent that the Paipo and it's Shinnster copy is a great design.

Those red and white pads look great! Nice work!

I've ridden some skimboards and a Naish Alaia before, but didn't really like them. The lack of fins made it too loose for my taste. Also, I have a slingshot space pickle that a lot of people ride with 2 fins, but I much prefer with all 4 fins in. So I'm wondering if I would like the Shinnster/Paipo? Does the hard straight rail make it track pretty well and feel solid? Or does the nose hunt around and want to slide out in turns more like a skimboard?

If you put your front feets slightly more toward the front of the board it track very solidly. Nothing to compare with no skim, the rail is almost straight parallel and the board is 160cm long so you have a long efficient rail to help keep your line. If you have more weight to the back, then the nose tend to move around a little. So you ride it like you want and this is what I really like about this board. Also, I next week I will receive bigger fins (80mm instead of 57mm) and see how different it will be. Me, I want to improve the low end with a better upwind drive.

In my opinion the Shinnster tracks a lot better than a skimboard, even compared to my old crazy fly skim, which also had 2 fins in the back. But it does become loose if you get planing/more flat, you need to hold the edge. It does not sit as solid in the water as a 'real' surfboard with big fins.
But the fact that it is more loose makes it fun, easy to move around under your feet.

And thanks everyone for the nice comments on the deck pads :thumb:

Phil noticed that I even made a cut out for the Shinn name
-I wanted the pads to cover as much as possible of the board, as I do use a large portion of the board some times...

Haha… I did the same thing with the TOMO logo on my Vanguard !
This way I make sure credit to the board designer is not hidden… or maybe it's because I love this old school logo :cool2:
… and for ensuring a full grip on the deck, the logo is covered with some see-through Versagrip :thumb:

Two shades of awesome!

I found two translucent tape type brands: XM Clear Grip (Same as NSI) that I bought and versa traction from vgtsports.com
There is clear tail pad Hawaiian Hot Grip from surfcohawaii, but i have no experience with it.

I got my 4 peace pad from http://surfmorexm.com/content/clear-gri ... d-traction
But had to reuse cutoffs to cover most of the board, would buy 6 peace better.

Tested pads with booties, not sticky like wax, but grippy! Not a single slip on it.
