Well I have the 2013... Not the 2014, maybe taut' can comment on any differences between these two years for me.
I tested a lot of SBs over a few years until I settled on the global. It's not light, but bomb proof build. For me it's 'tight' enough on the 5 8' to not bounce around when tacking upwind, but still has enough to kill the kite, get deep in a pocket and ride the wave. Best ridden strapless or at least without the back strap. Love the board.
Yeah too me the newer is just a bit lighter. I think they worked a lot on construction so it should still be solid. It rides a lot like the last years on a thruster setup, feels like it releases a bit easier off the top...with more spray
The reason I went with the bigger board was really because it was lighter so I felt I could get the same agility out of a bigger board. I dunno to what extent that was the right guesstimation, but I've gained weight too so I guess it will work it self out.
