Yeah i think sheeting needs to be discussed. Not all kites like a sheet in and stay sheeted for the whole jump. Some like to be sheeted out partially while in the air.

Plus you can stall and drop faster in some instances if your sheeted in the whole time. I usually sheet out on the way down to speed the kite up then sheet in for a softer landing.

The more camber the kite got the longer and slower the kite can fly with full power without loosing the lift. :thumb:

Very entertaining, well done. I see that your harness is very high up on your chest, seemingly at your sternum, is this how you normally ride?

Can you talk about the sheeting during jumping, specifically when you pull in and when you let go.

Thx

The reason my harness is very loose on my body Mr. yojimbo is because I have broke most of my ribs and 2 of them never set properly because I never stopped kiting. So it hurts a lot if I tight my harness around me. So in few words in order to be comfortable with out pain I have to kite the way you see it on the videos or magazines. I just got use to it. But for sure you want your harness to be very tight on you for better balance.

Now concerning "Sheeting In" or "Sheeting Out" during a jump…Well, it's all up to you. Usually I "Sheet Out" when I want to decent from my jump. So before taking off depending how strong the wind is I usually have my bar around 20cm to 30cm away from me and once I do step (2) this is when I "Sheet In" by pulling the bar even closer to me (10 cm) in order to get the most power possible, and then step (3) push off the board but still keeping my bar close to me. Then in step (4) this is when I decide what to do by looking at the landing and the surroundings. I can push the bar away from me just a little for a soft landing or if I see an object in front of me and want to land faster I will push the bar away from me all the way to the end by "Sheeting Out" fast. But if I see I can even pass that object while decending then I definitely "Sheet In" again, in order to close my kite again for more power. So in few words I do play with my bar by pushing out and pulling in depending the situation I am in.

By doing all this "Sheeting in and out" you are playing with the angle of attack of the kite. But you have to be smooth while doing it so you don't disturb the canopy of the kite while in the air.

Now if I am going to do big boards off, then it is a different ball game because I use the STOPPER BALL in order to keep my bar very close to me while my other hand is off my bar playing with my board.

I hope this answers your question.

What do you mean by camber?

Need some more wind to get the "big part" lol

Or you could make that 16m in an 18m version with a micro loop.... lol.....Then send me a demo 18m....

Ok - for those of you not sure about how much to sheet in or out...

A few examples to suit various kites....

1. To maximize lift at say 15 knots, start by standing on the beach - and sheet the bar in untill it sits directly overhead at 12oclock - that is the optimum vertical lift angle of your kite.
Take note of the bar position...
This is a good starting point - I personally set my bars to 'just be' fully sheeted in this position without any backstall.

Then go out and experiment, check your bar position during a few jumps to see where you actually have it - it will be different compared to the beach test - when you steer the kite into the jump and swing under it ... the kite continually changes its aerodynamic efficiency or (angle of attack) etc.

If a stronger gust hits - it will automatically induce a little drag or stall which is why I don't set for backstall on the beach at all...

Fine tune the bar in the air by sheeting in or out a little to see what position keeps you in the air the longest... so it will help you understand your kite dynamics better..

2. For roughly every 5knots + or - your kite is going to respond differently and your settings may have to change.
When I'm riding and the wind say increases to 20 knots, I adjust the Depower in - so full power is "just" before the kite backstalls at full speed.

3. The exception being, if you have do not have an explosive big air fast turning jump kite... You may want to have more bacstall in your setting to help it turn better..

Everyone has there style but this puts you in the ball park.

What Dimitri says about the fast slashing 2 & 3 count... cannot be over emphasised, the more aggressive you do it "The bigger you'll go" !!!

Wear a impact vest and helmet untill youve got it down - there's no shame in going huge ;)

Have fun :)

Sorry, wasn't nit-picking... just noting a difference. I've often thought it's less important than good timing and kite control.

Good video :thumb:

Ouch, sorry to hear about the broken ribs. Currently dealing with kiters elbow, wanna go out, but know that I shouldn't. It's maddening.
