Helpfull advice for a landboarding?

Postby Do-it » Fri Feb 20, 2015 3:10 am

Ahoy,

I was hoping you guys could point me in the correct direction of land boarding. I live an hour away from the beach, and can't always make the drive for an afternoon session. There is a park not to far from my house that I would like to utilize for after work sessions. I'm sure it will be fairly gusty. Any suggestions on kite selections, boards, ect ? I was hoping to use my inflatable kiteboarding kites. Should I upsize or down size kites for grassy conditions? I own lot's of body armor from base jumping that I will probably use during the introduction period. Oh.... I grew up skating so i'll probably want to purchase a board that will be good for progressing on. Thanks in advance

I use the same size kites and a mountain board. u want a mile of fetch several hundred acres. a small field is unridable half the time your kite is laying on the ground . mountain boarding is fun to do on the beach on a light wind day. give it a try you'll see what I mean.

DUDE --- do you do a Lot of drugs ?
There is an entire section on THIS forum , totally dedicated to nothing BUT snow & Land !!

I use ram-air kites for land and snow ; i'm too cheap to get the totally
depower-able ram-airs, but that would be the way to go if Ya got a bit of
money to spend. I got one of the best dry-lake beds in the USA to kite on,
so a depower-able kite , isn't as much a concern for me , cause there ain't nothing
to hit, where i kite. Getting launched on land ; it hurts More than the water , so
getting rid of the power , could be a good thing.

To start with roll one size smaller than on the water. Lei's are fine for landboarding. Foils are faster to launch and can take more hits before being damaged. But there are slower and can't handle gusts as well.

Feet weighting is 50/50 not 70/30 like kitesurfing. Its all about drifting on the landboard. Control your drift by pushing the back foot around rather than using the front foot to turn.

Trampa are the berries for boards or mbs if trampa isn't available.

Skate trucks and small deck for freestyle and smooth surface. Big wheels channel trucks and longer wheel base for bumpier surface and to go faster.

Look for a clean wind site. Gusty wind sucks balls.
Use the rule of thumb as a guide. Extend your arm out at full length. Hold your thumb parallel to the ground. close one eye. If the obstacle is bigger than your thumb upwind of you there will be too much turbulence. Look for a better spot.

PS longboard skateboard and trainer kite on smooth concrete are pretty sublime!
