Kite schools near South Beach

Postby Touche » Sat May 16, 2015 5:46 pm

I have a friend visiting South Beach right now... basically two girls that have never tried kiting before. What are some spots that you guys would recommend? Probably looking for 2-3 spots and they'll choose whichever is closest to them.

may as well just go to the school that teaches out of crandon park, i think miami kiteboarding. that's probably one of the best spots to learn in the area since it's shallow and flat

i would advise them about optimal wind speeds for learning though... i don't know if that shop would just take a students money and try to teach in 8-10 mph wind, but that's about all we've gotten in terms of wind recently. personally i dont really teach unless it's at least 14-15, so they don't have to worry about the kite falling out of the sky. just a heads up about florida wind, at the moment. (i've gotten to kite once in the last 3 weeks due to shit wind)

Yea they're taking my word for it... you think I'd be better off just telling them to wait it out?

Miami Kiteboarding in Crandon Beach Park on Key Biscayne

Adventure Sports in Mattheson Hammock Park (near Coconut Grove, mainland, south of Downtown)

And then private instructors (not sure if school) at SoBe 25th street.

Or ask at The Kite Shop on SoBe.

Google all.

there's a chance of some wind tomorrow (sunday) probably along with some rain. other than that there's nothing in the forecast, i'd suggest skipping lessons. i don't know how those specific schools operate, but south florida in general is pretty scummy and might take their money and give them a 2 hour lesson on rigging the kite, maybe trying to get them to fly it while it will barely stay in the air

the "windy" season here is over, so it's unlikely something will pop up at this point

I live on the beach in Highland Beach, no wind shadows where I kite ;) It just hasn't been worth pumping the kite up unless you like doing underpowered downwinders

Moving back to the west coast in 2 weeks, stoked to actually kite again!
