The best weather forecast site?

Postby alexrider » Thu May 21, 2015 12:43 am

In my opinion, Windyty is the best of the ones I came across. It combines without compromise all the ingredients of windguru, earth, windfinder... The only thing I'd like to see incorporated is a grib file viewer.
Go through all what it offers and judge for yourselves, and let us know if you know a better one.
As usual, anything endeavored by passion surpasses what is made with profit in mind.

i think it really depends on the spot and what drives the wind, in south florida the forecasts are pretty good at predicting "predictable" weather patterns like frontal wind, but it's pretty terrible at predicting anything that comes from the sea breeze

in the gorge the weather was so complex the only good forecast is Temira's website and windguru/windalert/et al suck

It's weather forecast after all! :o
As far as accuracy is concerned, they are all about the same since they all take their data from the same source (I believe). I was comparing the presentation, user friendliness, amount of data.

Perhaps this topic is the opportunity to list the most used (world) weather sites and programs. Here is a small batch to start with:
- windguru.com
- windfinder.com
- www.wunderground.com
- weather.org
- www.buoyweather.com
- earth.nullschool.net
- www.accuweather.com
- www.zygrib.org (grib viewer program)
- www.grib.us (grib viewer program)

Swell map does a good job for me locally.

Then once settling on a forecaster you have to add you own local experience.

I know that westerly is predicted pretty well. But a summer seabreeze can at 5-10 knots to a west/sw. But take 5-10 knots of a N or NW wind.

SE usually 5+ knots more than forecast.

big snow dump on the mountain can work like an landbreeze and take 5-10 knots off the forecast.

Cloud cover kills the seabrease. sunny brings it on....

So i'f I apply that local knowledge to the forecast then it becomes pretty accurate.

Anyone who uses "et al" in a sentence is classified useless. Temira isn't right more than anyone else in the Gorge. I can predict with 87% accuracy during the summer in the Gorge what the wind is going to do. It's called the law of averages.

I use WindAlert... I think they may only be stateside though. One of our local riders is a meteorologist for them. They have 4 local wind stations here in Chucktown, for real time conditions and forecasts. They have others up and down the east coast.

I think it depends where you are. I pay for the Ikitesurf pro app, but I always cross check with with the Operation Forecast System which is really accurate for wind on the Great Lakes. It only gives you a 3 day window but from experience its almost dead on. They have other maps for the west coast and florida that I have not been able to test.

Ok bro.

P.S. Take a look at windguru, windalert, windfinder, et al and watch them predict 0-5 knots on days it is blowing 30-40. And then look at Temira's site see actual predicted winds. That's the point of forecasting. That's the point of this thread.
