OAKLAND -- A woman has been charged in the May 29 killing of businessman Royce V. Vaughn, who was deliberately run over with his SUV near his West Oakland home, authorities said.
The suspect, Ella Coleman, 24, who is charged with murder, was already in custody after being convicted of an August assault. She is being held without bail and is scheduled to enter a plea to the murder charge on Jan. 11.
Authorities said the two did not know each other before the killing. Vaughn, 47, was the owner of an Emeryville kiteboarding shop business.
Authorities said Vaughn picked Coleman up on San Pablo Avenue in his Toyota FJ Cruiser and the two went to the 800 block of 28th Street about 11 p.m. May 29 where they got into an argument, possibly over money. Vaughn was outside the SUV when he was "intentionally" run over, police said.
The SUV was found a few hours later in the 1400 block of 44th Avenue in East Oakland.
Police were eventually able to link Coleman to the death through physical evidence. In a Dec. 8 interview with investigators she admitted driving over Vaughn, according to court records.
Coleman was initially arrested about 2 a.m. Aug. 25 in the 2200 block of Telegraph Avenue after stealing a woman's wallet. In a subsequent confrontation Coleman punched and bit both the woman and a man who came to the victim's aid, authorities said. Coleman was initially charged with two counts of robbery as well as having a prior 2010 felony conviction -- accessory after the fact; knowledge of a crime. In a plea bargain Oct. 26 she pleaded guilty to assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury. On Nov. 24 she was sentenced to a year in jail, five years probation and ordered to make restitution, according to authorities.
