Slingshot Celeritas light wind fins?

Postby kooshball » Mon Jul 06, 2015 2:08 pm

I had my first strapless session over the weekend on my 2104 Celeritas; F'ing awesome! Went up wind in 10kts on my 12M solo kite!

This really has me questioning the need for any bigger kite or dedicates light wind setup; why spend thousands more? i figured that perhaps the best thing to do would be to see if there are larger fins more suitable to staying upwind in light wind that I could put on for these light wind days? Do such fins exist and if so, what should I look for?

I played with different fin sizes on a directional and my experience is that rider ability has bigger impact than fin size for light wind. Save your cash and keep getting out there!

Interesting question . I have 2010 ( I think ) Celeritas and a 2013 spacepickel. Both have similar fins, SP is a quad. It goes upwind better , but only adds 1-2 knots lower end compared to the Celeritas.
I Have looked for fins for other boards and I have not seen any futures or fcs fins that would be what I call good for upwind.

I've built some boards and studied designs, I'm not an expert , but the toe -in and kant angle of the fins has a huge impact as does fin placement and not to mention board rocker, outline, and rail shapes.

Fins are expensive ! 100 bucks to just try it??

It may be that adding fin area and learning to ride the board flatter and driving off the fins will get you upwind better. But I'd bet the added fin area is not the key factor .

You'd be better off getting a North Nugget or Airrush sector that has Tuttle boxes.

I have the Celeritas 2015. You would not get much difference with bigger fins to go upwind. I have put small fins (when is shallow) and the original fins and they don't make much of a difference. the only way to go upwind quick is using light wind gear (foils, race boards, bigger kite)

Your main problem will be the FCS fin boxes. They're not designed for long fins like ones in the Sector/Alias with the mini-tuttle box.

These are the largest FCS fins I could find. They're X-Large Size and I'm using them on my Airush Cypher 5'10 (the 2014 3" thick model)

Anything bigger will either break the box or the fin tabs.

There are slightly bigger fins, the biggest I found: ... ro-tri-set

Comparing them to the on norcom has, the sweep ist a bit steeper, which I guess makes them turn more playful, which is why I chose them.

I use them an my Naish skaters. I have one in 4.8 which was unridable in low wind ( at 180lbs/82kg) because I had to fight for every inch going upwind. With these fins it has become a beautiful funny skatey funboard.

I would love to try yours, norcom!

I had this conversation with clint2070 about my firewire potatonator. He swore by the SeaWorthy future fins, which i do now as well. I don't know why, but the light wind performance these fins offer is incredible. In another thread on here, someone posted a place where you can get fcs style seaworthy design fins. The combination of proper technique and the right fins on the right board has radically improved my upwind game. Def worth the 100 bucks.

I'm also on a 2014 Celeritas and a 2015 LF Solo 12 for light wind.
Awesome combo for small surf.
I go with standard shape fins.
