Warning: Naish bar secretly wants to slash your face!

Postby flying doctor » Sun Aug 02, 2015 3:55 pm

Well, just bought some brand new pivots (2015 models 7 and 9 in a clear out sale) to go with my new firewire VG 5'2".

Took the 7m out in a solid 25knots and 1,5-2m waves, great conditions.

First impressions were good, smooth power delivery etc but had to abort the session after the bar smacked me in the face...

To be honest, the wave that washed me (after a floater) might have had something to do with it, but I have had bars strike me before in these conditions but never with a cut as result.

Strange looks on the beach as my face was covered with blood, luckily got a lot of help packing my stuff so I could get it glued at the hospital.

Funny thing is: Everybody on the beach commented on how hard the ends of the bar are, but on closer inspection the day after it's not made of hard plastic but slightly rubberized material..

So what do you guys think: is the Naish bar a slasher in disguise? Is their aggressive styling form over function?
Or am I just getting older and unable to take a good punch? :o

Probably more of a tear than a slash. I was at a golf driving range with my son a few years ago when he suddenly got a 4 stich gash above his eye. He was not hit by the club, it was the ball that shoot up because he had teed up to high and his club went under the ball. Talk about a freak accident. Point being , even a golf ball can tear your skin with enough force..

I ride strapless wave too. It rarely hsppens that i get hit by my bar but any bar would do that. The slingshot bar hitting you is the worst. I get hit in the back of my head by my surfboard more than my bar ! Now that hurts !

First thing I do when washed by a wave is letting go of the bar and cover my head with my arms, face down. Saved me from a hit by board or bar on some occasions.

Every bar will hit hard if you're unlucky. No matter how spongy they are.

It is part of the the risk involved with the sport. I dont think the gear is to be blamed.

Is there enough material on the end of the bar ; to grind that pointy edge off ?
Even if it's soft ; it would rip your skin Less, (if it was rounded off ) .

Now that your bars got it in for you, buy a Cab' bar with big soft ends - and swap all the naish lines to it :)

Or learn some better skills - so your bar doesn't get embarrassed and beat you down :thumb:

That made me LOL!
Guess you nailed the problem!

@ Bille, it is the pointy stuff I'm worrried about indeed, other bars I've used were usually well rounded.. not sure about shaving anything off though, I'll have to see if that's possible.
