Waves in Asia

Postby jedi1 » Tue Nov 24, 2015 4:42 pm

Hi,
I am looking for a place for a trip in February/ early March. I was planning to go to the Phillipines, but now I am a bit hesistant, as there are so many different opinions. I wanted a spot with nice waves, preferably side-shore wind. I am not looking for the biggest and gnarliest waves out there, but a spot with good waves to practice technique on, like Cabarete for example.

Kingfisher looked great at Reo Stevens movie, but after reading some opinions on this forum, it seems that you have to be lucky to get good conditions there. Since getting there is hard to say the least, I am not sure if going there would be a good idea.

I chose Asia this time, but if there are other spots for that time I will surely consider it as well.

I am quite experienced on a twin tip, but just started riding a surfboard this year. I am able to stand my ground with 2-3m mushy wind swell and 30 knots, so clean waves up to that height should be ok.

Do you guys recommend any good place?

There is a relatively new location in Vietnam, called Phan Rang that has a reef and big waves. It is still only accessed on trips from Mui Ne as far as I know. There is more information on FaceBook.

The North of Philippines gets good winds.
When I was there in a March it was blowing 30 knots for te time I was there (only few days though).
The kingfisher wave is for pros, but there are nice waves close by, less gnarly. Check on www.splocs.com
Just a bit west is a perfect 2m wave with side-offshore wind.

Phan Rang is not a consistent destination. It works only on a high tide & specific wind direction.

Phi organizes trips to Phan Rang, you can contact him about details in specific time frame.

12 months a year, Taiwan has the most consistent wind in Asia, with waves.

Maybe you can try Penghu, wave might not be perfect for you, but wind is pretty consistent.

Thanks for the data, Jan. Some people don‘t believe me when I said my main kite sizes are 4, 5 and 7.

Taiwan looks interesting. I will consider it. Have you guys been to Siargao? It looks promising, but I am not sure if it is just their marketing or is it that good?

I have never been to Siargo. Taiwan is good enough for me.
Yesterday in Taiwan: water 25 degC, Air 25 degC, wind 25 knots, wave 2.5m, date 25th Nov.
