Holy flying fish batman.

Postby plummet » Wed Dec 23, 2015 6:12 am

So I'm doing a big tack out to sea to get back upwind. Maybe 1km out?

This fish popped out the water. Sprouted some wings and proceeded to fly beside me about 10 foot away.
Then it banked into a turn and did this big sweaping arc around me and dived back into the sea and disappeared.

Really really cool.

I didn't even know we have flying fish around these parts.

Nice. I was doing similar tacks far upwind and about 1km out to sea from Jupiter in Florida over Thanksgiving and scared up several schools of them. Always cool to see.

I have seen flying fishes both in Maui and in Barbados, impressive!

I thought flying fish were only able to jump out of the water to momentarily escape predators. I had no idea they could actually fly about, like change direction mid air. Impressive!

It was in the air for maybe 10 seconds? So perhaps a gliding fall? Still really awesome.

I guess the wind helps for the gliding...

Would love to see this once :)

The larger ones can fly a good long way, dipping their tail into the water at intervals to boost above stall speed again. Sometimes you see sprays of small ones arch up in front of you here when well offshore.

It's not easy beeing a flying fish.

yeah they are pretty awesome.
We get quite a few of them here...I think the biggest surprise I have had was a huge barracuda that jumped out of the water super close to me.

And the most awesome was kiting with some big whales.

Damn that fish video was cool...

Being out there on that kite I always see a lot of crazy things. Bullsharks, stingrays, probably the coolest thing I've seen is a school of manta rays swimming the same direction I was kiting. Sometimes when I see a bullshark though I'll start freaking out and end up falling in the water because I wasn't paying any attention to my kite...
