Soloshot3 a New way to film kiting

Postby james53 » Wed Jan 20, 2016 2:44 am

Was researching ways to film my kitesurfing adventures other than just the standard P.O.V. camera. After some research I came across this and thought it would be pretty awesome for kiting.

At first I was pretty skeptical, but after visiting the companies website at https://shop.soloshot.com/
I learned the range was 2,000ft. and they have security systems in place to reduce the risk of theft.

The auto film, live stream, and auto editing are getting me really close to pulling the trigger. Especially right now because you receive a 30% discount for the pre-order price. Just wondering if anyone has experience with this company, and or your thoughts on generation 3?

I am filming with the 2 since 1 year.

Had man problems with it. When it works, it is fantastic.

With the 3 they should have improved a lot of problems and made it easier.
The setup is now really short and easy...quiet a hassle on 2.

Plus, the camera they offer will have automatic zoom with a big optical zoom.

I preordered it, hopefully will receive it asap.

I have emailed them 3 times with no response.

a friend of mine ordered the soloshot 2 when it was first released and it took months and months with no communication before it finally arrived.

These guys have a cool idea but their lack of customer support is disappointing.

I was able to give them a call today and put my order in. Pretty stoked for it to arrive.

This is the SOLOSHOT2 but you can see it provides a pretty rad perspective angle. I hear the tedious set up is now gone. Also I'm not sure what camera this was shot on, but after looking at the Specs on the SOLOSHOT3 camera I bet it will provide a better picture.

Pumped for some wind and my gear to come!

Soloshot2 had no own camera. You have to attach one.
Some could have automatic zoom...this features is now included with their very own camera.
Up to 65x optical zoom. You set the zoom level and soloshot keeps it. Awesome.

I hope to get my 3 early spring before I go back to Brazil. Will post a review for sure.

The calibration and that you can move it around are the key feature for me...that was a big hassle on 2.

But they improved the software on 2 a lot...much more accurate following now. I had many problems. I assume I am the guy who most used it in the sport of kitesurfing...therefore had that many issues.

Waiting for my 2 to return...had technical problems with the tags. Should be solved now.
They offered a great service.

I've had a Soloshot 1 and now a 2. Big improvements from 1 to 2 and the 3 looks like a real big step up.

The Soloshot 2 is a little fiddly to setup but once you've done it a couple of times it's not a problem. And it's a great way to film yourself or in my case to get additional angles when I'm filming someone else with my main camera. I've used it extensively to film all our kite shots and many of the common mistakes in our Progression wave riding videos and I now don't travel anywhere without it.

Can't wait to see how the SS3 works out, would seem like the quick setup and integrated camera should be a massive improvement for most people. And for what you get, they are pretty reasonably priced.

Disclaimer: I bought my SS1 when it first came out. I have met the guys from SS and they have loaned me an SS2 for my current project but I'm a big fan anyway and would buy one anyway if they hadn't loaned me one.

Ah, great to know you also used it a lot!

Did you have problems with the tags?
Did you have the plastic on the arm bands breaking?

@Toby - No major problems with the tags, one time it did get a bit confused and record about 20 degrees out. It mainly seemed to have issues when I was going back to the camera lot to check footage.

No issues with the armband but I have only used the SS2 about 10 times, I used the SS1 a lot more but no problems with that either. I leave my tag in the armband all the time as I think that beefs up the plastic shell and makes it less likely to break when in a bag or floating around in my car.
