Slingshot Rally 2014 leading edge bending/boxing issue?

Postby alxg » Mon May 23, 2016 7:48 am

Hi, I bought a used 2014 Rally last year. Flown it a couple of times, but noticed in stronger winds (up to 30knots but not more) the leading edge would sometimes bend around the outermost bridle attachment point. I've pumped the kite rock solid, but it will still bend if sent over the wind window or jumped with, also making a terrible noise (Imagine trying to bend a rock solid LE and then let go of it). Long story short I cursed at the kite and ignored the issue, worked fine for 4-5 sessions, then yesterday when packing down the kite I noticed the bladder sticking out right next to the bridle attachment point (see picture).

Are there any others having this issue?
I've contacted the shop I bought it from trying to get advice, but told I'm riding it underinflated, which I was not, and suggesting to get a more C-shaped kite since I'm too heavy, 200lbs, and riding in too strong wind, 20-30knts. Well it is a 8m kite and other kiters was riding fuel 9m and Best GP 11m at the same time...

I believe there is an issue with the bridle putting too much tension on the outermost attachment point on the leading edge, or steering lines are to long (but I checked this morning and they look ok compared to front lines).
I'm using the 17" bar with 20m lines.

Wow, im shocked that any 2014 kite can do this! :o :o :o :o :o
never seen that before even from a 2010 kite, would like to know what causes this dangage the bridle is also pulled out of the stiching - crazy. Even with my cheapest kites this has never happen - could be a friday kite from slingshot - normally bombproof kites - i stopped riding slingshot after very bad and slow customer service and will never go back - not worth the energy for such an expensive kite in my view - there are too many alternatives out there that work just as well if not better without the high price.....

Hope you get you problem solved

Havent crashed it a single time! Treated it as a baby because of the folding issue ... only have 10ish sessions on it moving the lawn and some jumps.

Compare bridle lenghts to the good side.

There is no good side, both sides bend symmetrical, so the other side is prob going to rip when I fix the tear :(

I don't know how this can happen other than inverted or backwinded. You probably inverted it in the water and didn't even know it or maybe too much depower and then backwinded. Both can happen easily especially when under inflated.

No invertion, no crashes. I don't know what previous owner did with it tho. Talked to a couple of kite repair centers, they've seen several Rally's like this before and recommend stiching and reinforcing both sides and apperantly it's a common place for wear on the Rally's. Anyone want to buy a cheap "like new" Rally?

Picture from the day it ripped, I noticed there was too much pressure on the outermost bridles and went in since the wind picked up

The "good side" notice the bridle attachment is really pulled out. No signs or tears after folding:

The torn side:

Clearly bending around the bridle point:

I mean there is prob a possibility the prev owner trashed once and damaged the LE, but really doesnt explain the folding issue on both sides :/
