About to buy new glasses for kiting...any recommendations

Postby lindseym » Mon Jul 11, 2016 3:23 am

I'm tired of losing cheap sunglasses and they probably offer no protection. What do you all recommend? I want something that will stay on my head (backstrap), UVA/B, and doesn't look too goofy. i was thinking Kurtis brand.
Thx all,

BTW , Toby, what are you using these days ?

You're thinking Kurtis but you don't want goofy-looking?!? :D

Unless you're using a neck leash, hat with straps etc you're going to lose them. I don't believe anyone who claims their glasses float, and even if they do, they're impossible to spot.

I'm using Dirty Dogs at the moment and they're ok. I've also got 720-armor Sharks v1 which I use with one of those woo-woo powerband necklaces as a leash, but the brown lenses don't work well when the silt has been stirred up in the lake.

The previous pair I had were excellent, and "floated", but I couldn't find them after a wipeout so they're gone. Can't remember the brand name, but was an obscure one and I got them from the UK eBay. The best anti-fog I've used, except for the Sharks, but one $40 or so.

Sea Specs.

Cheap, they work great, and I've never lost a pair. They've fallen off a very few times getting super rolled by waves, but they float, and I've always managed to find them again.

Cazal. The waves have exquisite taste in eyewear, so why not treat them to something fresh. I'm partial to the Legends 616 in white and gold. You would need an aftermarket strap, like the Bobberz found in our local convenience stores.

I was specifically thinking of them when I said "claim to float but don't" :D

Hmmm, funny. I have 2 pairs and my brother has 2. I can definitely confirm from personal experience that all 4 sets do indeed float.

I counter with 4 pairs at the bottom of the lake :D

Glasses that "float" seem to do so just below the surface as the water gets denser then eventually disappear.

Gotta put a leash on those puppies!

Hmmm, 4 pairs float after a wave tumble (assume ocean?) and 4 other pairs end up in the bottom of the lake. Seems these glasses float in salt water and sink in freshwater. Any Dead Sea riders to report Sea Specs floating performance?

The new Seaspecs definitely float. I bought three pairs for 99usd on their website this year.
I do not believe that all models or older models float. Also picked the ones with colored sides, much easier to spot in the water.

I like my Kurtis, they float well but are expensive for what they are.

I also ride with my "whatever" sunglasses sometimes and just put a duct tape or electrical tape leash on them. There are a couple of brands that make expensive watersports eyewear, but at this point I'm starting to realize that the cheapest polarized uva/uvb sunglasses are going to do everything I need them to if I just tape them to my face, and cost a LOT less.
