Kite Seat Harnesses

Postby DSZ » Wed Sep 07, 2016 2:41 pm

Ok so I know these may be for kooks but my old back can't seem to take a waist harness anymore and I've tried several types. Been using an old Dakine Nitrous I got years ago when I injured a rib. Back is not bothered anymore but not really liking the "trunks" style. Anyone used the ION Radar seat or B2 trunk style and/or Dakine seat and care to comment. Thanks!

After many years off kiting I now can't stand using a waist harness, my first harness many years ago when I started kiting was a seat harness which was very comfortable but I eventually sold that for a waist harness because of the popularity factor. But as the years went by I have noticed a lot of irritation to my back and body . Last 2 years I have switched back to a seat harness (dakine vega) which is not only very comfortable but really provides the correct support point for kiting in general.

I ride with a Mystic Force Shield and like it, but it fits/works better if you usually ride with a relatively low kite position in the air because whenever I ride around overpowered with my kite mostly overhead, it really digs into my groin. From a back-pain perspective, it's a LOT better than a waist harness, and for foiling it provides a much more comfortable/powerful stance.

I have a (long time ago) slipped disc aka herniated/prolapsed disc and more recently 4 broken ribs so have to wear a seat harness. Have an ION Echo which has always been comfortable but is now completely worn out - by pure chance I'm collecting my new 2017 ION Echo-X tomorrow.

At least I hope so, because we're off to Essaouira on Saturday 10th! 8)

Went back to a seat harness after I started foiling and have not had back or rib issues at all in the last two years. Using a Mystic seat harness. Cheap and reliable.

Wow these are great responses, thank you. In my travels I am finding more and more "mature" kiters are using seat harnesses for a variety of reasons but most due to waist harness caused back issues.

Best riders I know wear seats or board short harnesses. Several are in the 40plus WOO club.
A kook to me is someone who will not wear a seat because they think its uncool :nono:

I like the Nitrous when riding strapless - no chance for it to squeeze me where I don't want it to because I'm not jumping. For jumping I use a waist harness but will follow this thread and look for a seat/hybrid to help the lower back.

When I started kiting a couple of years back, I chose a seat harness because that is what I was used to from wind surfing since the '80s with the intent of "progressing" to a waist harness when I got better. I really never felt the need to go to a waist harness. The only thing I can see that may be different is when boosting, you are suspended at a higher position so you are more prone to stay upright. The other thing is with your hook lower, you have more mechanical advantage over the pull of the kite.
I currently use a B2 ION board short harness. I found and bought a hard to find new Dakine Nitrous board short early this year, but it ended up being too small..
