Kitesurfing NYC/NJ/CT

Postby Kitemanmuc » Thu Sep 08, 2016 12:42 am

I currently live in Miami and love the amount of kiting I get to do throughout the year.
My wife wants to move back to NYC. I told her if i can kite nearly as much as I can in Miami, im in.

Could someone help me out a little with regards to kiting in the NYC area. I don't mind living a 45 minute commute outside of the city. As long as I am near a great kite spot that is also family friendly.

Would love any feedback possible.

Both NY and NJ have tons of kite spots.

I live in Brooklyn and am about 45min from the main spots in Long Island. If you decide to live further out on Long Island you could be less than 20-30min away.

Winds are usually best spring and fall when storms come through. You will need a full wetsuit during those times. Summer's are more light, but often kite able if you have a foil or large kite.

Good winds

Thanks for your message. I appreciate the feedback and just a quick follow up on that. How many kite days do you think you get in the NYC area per year?

Hard to say. If you had no job and could go out on a whim probably 1-2 days a week for light wind (10-12knts)

For actual action (18knts+) probably 1-2/mon during spring/fall and 1/mon summer.

For example I just kited 12M Saturday and 9M on Monday (thx Hermine).

I live in Brooklyn and get >100 sessions a year, while keeping a fulltime job :-) I am 10 min away from 3-4 local spots and 45-60min from at least another 10 in LI and NJ.
You can kite all year round with proper gear.. I got 10 sessions in January.. It's a bit chilly but the wind is cranking: 7-9m conditions..
Summer is hot but low wind - you can get out ~3 times a week with bigger kites (mostly the 17)

Here is copy/paste from a local group:

Some popular kiting spots in NY area.
Plumb Beach 40.583314, -73.921031
This is the go to spot for NY and Brooklyn people. Relatively flat water, lots of kiters free parking but limited. Especially on summer weekends. Not as clean as further east. Good on south and east winds. Thermals usually kick in at the end of the hot days. Good audience for practicing your tricks.
Seagate 40.581196, -74.008477
3857 Oceanview Ave Brooklyn
Street parking. Works on N, NW winds. Chop. Cool views of NYC and ships entering harbor.
There are cleaner beaches. Usually gusty because of the N wind factor.
Venturi effect from the Hudson River.

Cross Bay Blvd. 40.637886, -73.832706
Not my favorite place but some love it for it’s flat water and smell. Works on a lot of wind directions N,E,S. free parking. Tight launch especially at high tide. When the President flies into JFK they pull us out of the water.

Further East. L.I. = Cleaner water
Gilgo Beach 40.617714, -73.395018
Expensive parking $40 , waves, a well know spot for surfers and kiters.
Cedar Beach 40.632910, -73.342287
Babylon, NY
Paid parking $25 weekends
Long walk to beach, food, bar, bathrooms, lifeguards, swimmers, local party scene, chop.
It is about a 2mi kite East to Democratic Point.

Oak Beach 40.639043, -73.302654
Babylon, NY
Free parking. Very limited.
Park and walk 400 yds west to launch spot.
SE to SW winds.
You can kite in the bay area or go south toward Democratic Point, about 1 mi. and do waves on one side or the slick on the other side. Varied terrain.

Rockaway Beach 40.587060, -73.795247
Queens, NY
Free street parking or access by subway. Ocean side so some waves and chop.
Works on E,S,W winds.

There is Napeaque Harbor. 41.003638, -72.053814
In the Hamptons, if you like to drive and enjoy traffic.
Never been there but a lot of people frequent the spot.
Flat water spot. Best winds S,SW.

Off season we have a lot more opportunity.
Coney Island 22 St, or the Aquarium. SW to SE winds
Breezy Point in Rockaway. W winds
Tobay beach in Gilgo area. NE to NW winds.
Overlook beach in Gilgo area. SW to SE.
Crab Meadow on the N shore of L.I.
Then there is Jersey.

i kite in ny and northern nj. i usually kite at least 2 times a week, sometimes 3 or 4. maybe missed 4 weeks in the past 2 years excluding half a season due to injury and some in the winter when its too cold for the water and the snow is nonexistant or iced over. mid fall to spring have decent to strong wind a few times a week, summer is light thermals that could get strong with some help from a southerly until late summer where its light thermal unless a decent front rolls through. winter is hit or miss depending on how warm it is and how cold you can go. 2 years ago anything but ocean was frozen but was great for snowkiting, last year maybe 2 weeks of snowkiting and the rest of the time i was on the water

You can subscribe to facebook channel "Northeast #kitelifeCrew", "kitehood" to follow the action in tri state area.

New York has awesome kiting spots with strong wind from september to June. We probably got 5 25 knots session during the summer as well, though usually we get 12 to 18 knots in summer.
Last winter was pretty mild so kited all the way to mid January, went to carribean for 2 weeks and kited again from mid februrary... Previous winter we stopped on January 1st, did a few snow kite session and started kiting again last week of february.

If you don't mind wearing a wetsuit you will have more fun in New York than light wind session in Miami.

I live on longisland but work downtown manhatthan. I have great spots 25 to 40 min away from home. From the city if I take train at 5:10 I can be at a spot at 6:30 for after work session. Or dawn session and still be at work around 10 am.
I usually can do 2 session a week. It was kiteable from saturday to Wednesday. did 3 session.

New Jersey has a lot of great spots too. Longisland has Ocean south, longisland Sound on the North with some nice offshore/bay setup. In the middle there is Great South bay with grassy island which can compare to outerbanks setup but with gustier wind. There are 4 different shore you can kite from, so tons of possibility.

Checkout my youtube channel, I have a lot of NY spots featured on it:
