I had an interesting thing happen to me recently while trying my first front rolls. If I crash facing the kite I can always keep it alive, but landing backwards I'm terrible at. I've landed backwards enough now that I understand pulling one hand makes the kite go opposite from your backwards orientation, but I'm not sure I'll immediately pull the right hand when I land backwards...it just doesn't happen enough...if that becomes instinctive to grab the correct hand I'd like to know
I was on about my 5th front roll attempt when I went a little too high and over rotated and landed smack backwards and the kite was falling at about 60-45 deg. For some reason, instead of a firm pull to get the kite up, I yanked the hell out of the bar and it was the wrong hand to pull
But, because I pulled so hard instead of the kite crashing it just down looped, glazed the waterline and up she went to 12.
This got me thinking, could it be beneficial when disoriented and the kite is starting to crash to yank hard as hell on either hand so as to avoid slamming the kite into the water if you guess 50% incorrect on which hand to pull?

I dunno. If you loop the kite, there is a chance that your crash will be much much worse. I think if you are disoriented, it might be better to get strategies that avoid being disoriented.
ie. Purposefully looping the kite while disoriented seems like a recipe for disaster to me.

It depends on how much of a thrill you want to get.
If you pull hard enough on either line, you will most likely be able to complete a loop.
You will also find yourself heading downwind at relatively high speed because of the power generated by the loop, and that's where there's potential for disaster.
The best think to do if you crash and are too disorientated to control the kite, is simply to let go of the bar.
The kite will lose most of its power, and will likely fall into the water. However, it will not be a fully powered frontal crash (the kind that splits a kite in half), but a more gentle drop into the water, probably closer to the edge of the window.
Much less chance of something going terribly wrong that way, and your kite will not get damaged as easily (stay away from boats and sharp objects).
So, the one line answer is:
let go of the bar

If you can tell which way is up, hold the bar horizontal.

A quick way to die !!
Let go the bar, let it crash, gather yourself, have another go

COOL story ; i can picture that happening !
To learn orientation , go body-drag in 15kts of wind ; and flip over on
your back every now & then.

Same here, if I get disorient I am letting go of the bar. Many times the kite will float overhead long enough to turn around and save it from crashing..

That works! in doubt just loop it!
If you don't feel much power in kite just push bar out or let go of bar, that ususally prevent kite from crashing or ususally it will just end up on side of window ready for a relaunch.
Though I often loop it like you suggested! One issue is that if your body in water kite will generate a lot of power so you risk breaking line and kite also won't hold shape (might damage kite?)
It depends how I crash but sometimes when I feel power in kite I just keep pulling had on whatever hand I was pulling until I feel kite heading up then push bar out. I have had crash where I landed backward with kite pretty far down so I skipped on water while kite was looping, while it's pulling you you end up on belly and let it go to 12.
For front roll you pull front hand during roll so when you crash just keep pulling front hand to complete downwloop. You can't go wrong, let go of back hand and pull front hand slightly throughout rotation eventually you will feel less power when kite head back to 12...
When I was learning front roll I often land them as a transition because kite downloop because rotation was slow or I pulled too much on front hand.

Don't try to loop it if you aren't prepared. I did accidentally and it hurt. Apparently it was very entertaining to everyone watching from what I heard on the beach afterwards. I was trying to really boost hard and came off edge oddly and started doing an unplanned backroll. I didn't know what was happening until it was too late, but I apparently pulled hard on the opposite hand and did a full powered loop. Being mostly backwards at the time I had no way to get around and try to land it. I got worked hard on my side. When I went in the water I could literally feel my eyelid get peeled back. I had gotten slingshotted downwind into shallower (1.5ft) water and was landing with my arm outstretched downward. Thankfully I saw it at the last minute and pulled my arm up. Otherwise it definitely would've been broken.

Yeah, you got lucky once. Don't count on it working regularly. Downlooping works great but you need to know where the kite is when you start it, so trying to do it when you're disoriented is a recipe for injury. The key to keeping your kite from crashing when you're disoriented is remembering which way the kite was pointed when you last saw it, give it a good tug to get it vaguely pointed toward 12 and either neutralize the bar or just let go till you get your wits back. Generally if the bar is out and the kite is pointed between 10 and 2 you have plenty of time to get yourself turned around and sorted out before it hits the water.
