Harnesses – new tightening system?

Postby Ianw » Sat Nov 26, 2016 7:40 am

Year after year the harness manufacturers bring us their latest ergonomically designed miracles but with the same old inefficient strap and buckle system. Half the ergonomic benefits are lost because we can’t micro tighten the harness when sailing. In my opinion SP Boarding has transformed foot strap design with their excellent strap and ratchet system. Can we please have a scaled up version of a similar system for all harnesses so we can micro tighten the harness when sailing?

Great point.

Lots of room for innovation here.

We had it already at the end of the 90s. Neil Pryde offered their automatic system which was working.
The Automatic System
The Automatic Spreader
Bar adjustment system
is a real innovation in
harness design.
Stronger, quicker and
more comfortable than
standard systems, it is
made from rugged, hard
wearing plastic, the
Automatic System is
designed to withstand
extreme stress without
failure. Instead of
fiddling about with
webbing and buckles,
simply snap the ladder-
lock buckle onto the
ratcheted belt for per-
cise, secure adjustment.
Dont remember why they went back to the classic buckle and webbing system. Probably it is more durable and cheaper. But yes, why not improve it and try again!? It took more than 30 years after inventing the spreader bar that hard shell harnesses came up to avoid constriction on the back too. But that is kiteboarding! Dominated by "designers" that are thinking that they are genius without having any clue about engineering. But this is another topic!

Why wear a kiteboarding harness when sailing anyway? Don't they make specific ones for it?

I had one of those Neil Pryde automatic system.

It was great... until it started slipping open after the 4th or 5th time using it.

Had to exchange it for one with the old and reliable buckle.

Quite honestly the Ride Engine carbon hook is pretty perfect. Strong, simple, and able to get crazy tight.

Just set the end loops as tight as you possibly can and still lever the loop over the hook. Lock them off and done. I've never been out kiting and thought, "gee, my harness is just a tad too tight and I'd like to loosen it .25cm."

I put the loop on my leash around the harness loop and use it to lever the harness loop over the hook like a tire iron. Works perfectly.

Same. When I first started learning I used my NP windsurf harness with the ratchet closure. It just wasn't up to the job as a kite harness and the higher pressures would spring open the ratchet. After the 2nd time I went and bought a new harness properly suited to the job.
