If you weren't so American-centric you would know that other parts of the world are having record temperatures; e.g. Sydney was 47 degrees centigrade yesterday. Last year was the second hottest year ever recorded despite being at near solar minimum. Solar variation over a sunspot cycle is tiny, about 0.1% of solar output. Svenmark's theories on cloud formation from ionisation of cosmic rays have little apparent effect on temperature.
The biggest drivers are greenhouse gas concentrations, ENSO, and aerosols (volcanic and man-made).
I would suggest that the Northern American cold spell is related to the increased waviness of the jet stream, which is in turn due to lower temperature variation between equatorial and arctic regions, plus ice melt on the Greenland ice sheet over summer. Attribution is difficult though for one-off events.

How did you figure? Any study or just your daily dose of DeSmogBlog?

You got that right.
"The study, based on observations and statistics, did not find evidence for a popular scientific theory that links melting Arctic sea ice to blasts of cold air escaping the top of the world".
