Postby SpaceRacer » Wed May 31, 2017 3:31 am

Hi, anyone have this setup? Anyone know how to adapt the RE spreader bar to the shorts?

Thanks

You could use the new Dakine Option spreader bar, looks sweet and as the name suggests it has options.

X2

With the option you can run it fixed hook, sliding hook or just rope, like the Ride Engine.

Or just hacksaw the hook off of a spreader bar and tie a rope across it. I've been using this setup for years with nitrous board shorts and it works really well. I haven't used dakines newer option bar, but their sliding spreader bar from last year was pretty lousy.

That could work. And only 5 questions:-)

1) What type of rope is best?
2) Where do you tie it off? Inside the strap attachment?
3) What type of ring do you run?
4) How much slack do you leave in the rope?
5) And most importantly.....does a standard chicken loop (I ride North) safely slide out of the ring? Seems like to could get hung up and kill you.

Thanks;-)

1.) I use Amsteel blue rope, 1/4 inch. I replace the rope after 50-100 sessions (though I'm sure I could get far more out of it if needed).

2.) The two ends of the rope go through attachment points on spreader bar and are spliced together behind the pad, creating a continuous loop of rope, but knots at the end work too. This is an old liquid force spreader bar, how exactly to attach ropes may vary by brand, be creative.

3.) I use an aluminum climbing carabiner from REI (it must be a quality, load-bearing carabiner), but also keep a welded steel ring on there as a backup (almost never use the ring). I replace the carabiner after about 100 sessions, but this is out of precaution as they look fine then.

4.) Only a little bit of slack in the rope. Less than an inch, but I don't think it matters much.

5.) I've never had the QR hang up, but I don't have a north bar, and I don't use QR that frequently. I don't really see how it could get hung up on a carabiner, but maybe on a small welded ring it could.

I like that solution no need to open the CL every time you hook in and out and this reduces the wear on your CL. I have the Dakine sliding hook thing it's not great!

You have to be careful using a carabiner because kite lines can get in through the gate and really cause a problem. Used to happen fairly frequently. Use some sort of locking tube for the gate. Lots of old threads about this danger. Plus the newer sliders put much less wear on the rope and free up the movement.
