The lightest snappiest surfboard for overhead waves?

Postby flyingfishza » Sat Jul 01, 2017 5:49 pm

I dont have the luxury of being able to test boards, no shops around where I am most of the time.

Looking for as the title says , light strong and snappy, for waves overhead to double, I know asking for the holy grail.

While passing trough Florida recently I laid hand on the airush compact bamboo, love at first feel, probably one, if not the, lightest board I had held in my hands, seems to tick all the right boxes but not really much in terms of independant reviews out there.
Wondering how it would stand up to a hard pounding being so light.

Other option is the north wam

https://www.northkiteboarding.com/produ ... onals/wam/
For some reason weight never seems to be a given specification by manufacturers, well aware there may be slight variences due to manufacturing process but would it be that bad to give some guidelines.

Not married to to either option so would apreciate any input either way.

Wishing you wind and waves

Check out van hunks kiteboards. Gorgeous hand made boards for all conditions. Very light and strong.

If you mean it forget about kite branded boards.
Get a "real" surfboard that suits the waves you are riding -preferably in epoxy with futures fins instead of fcs, "heavy" or"hawaiian" glass schedule, and a strong blank (tow in blank or similar if polyurethane, 2-2.5# density if eps).
It will weigh 1-2# less than a kite co. Board and feel way better on a wave.
Get worked hard enough and it will break. Ride it in chop all the time and it will break (eventually).
Still worth it if you want a good ride in good waves.

I got such a board last year, night and day difference compared to 8-9lb "kitesurfboards". So far holding up after surfing and kiting in waves 2' (Caribbean & US east coast) to 8' (Portugal),
When it breaks, I'll get another.

compact is a real funboard, have a 5'5 carbon version quad setup....perfect board but the newer ones have a bit higher scoop...is better , but they do not make them this shortones anymore although the board has a huge range, with my 81 kg and 9M 7M 5M setup.
I have cypher 5'8 carbon version, my lightwind waveboard, too.
very happy with the shapes and how they function, in chop as in overhead waves...fast responding, soft into the turns and as snappy as you can push them,;:=))
BTW, if you are occasionally in SA get in touch with the Airush office there, you might be able to get in contact with the shaper of the boards and have them custom made build for you....in glas or carbon

Hervé Bouter boards are light and strong.

I cannot tell you'll like them...that's rather personal. I have the anti 5'0". It's fast, nimble, and can handle some pretty large surf. There are different shapes. Mine's less than 3 kgs, and it's very strong. It's taken two years of strapless kiting with some minor jumping, and all it has two show for it are some barely distinguishable heel dents.

Assume we are talking strapless since you are asking for a light board ?

The Wam would be great for what you need, but not sure it works well strapless and not really light either as quite strong (but not heavy either) :D

If in the US, check out Loyd Kite Surfboards.

My Kite Rocket 5'8 is only 2.45kg without fins (thruster) or grip. These boards are made for strong, overhead California and Oregon waves and those that like going BIG with strapless freestyle. Pro rider James Ropner kills it on these boards.

That was some great riding, guy does kill it.
Another option would be Firewire Vader, snappy, strong & light. They also have a kite version that is stronger but a bit heavier. Fun surf shapes, no inserts so strapless only.

KW, have you used the VD in those conditions, OH to double? I've ridden my VG in that and bigger, but I find when the waves get overhead it's too fast. The wide tail makes it impossible to slow down and stay in the pocket so my bottom turns run way out in front.

Firewire Profile V1.0, in kite construction, is what you need OP. My bro has the older version, Pivec Pro, and it really rips when it gets big. He was just out in double OH North Shore and having a blast while his buddy was getting pummeled and hating life in the VD.

I have the 5'2" white diamond. Great bit of kit.
