I can't read this thread... eerie... got the doctor syndrome where I get every illness I read about! If I read every post here I'll end up like Sam Jackson in Unbreakable :o My worst injury was psychological! Women tend to hysteria, so this girl tells me about her wipeout in a wave and the next day I ended up tumbled by a set of angry overheads... stopped kiting for a year, but I'm good now... there

when your foot went back onto the board did you roll your ankle?
no. Impact was downward into ankle. I think that is why spiral fracture be a snap.

5 years ago, while kiting in small surf, a thick hip-high wave smacked my right knee and heard a loud pop. Complete ACL rupture, partial MCL rupture, and damaged meniscus. I'm lucky as my knee is functional for everyday use, but I use an ACL specific brace while kiting. Did not operate yet.

A twin tip, no boots. I think two factors contributed to the injury, the heavy volume of the wave upon impact, and I think that my legs/knees were a bit tired from previous activities, kiting & running, so the muscles/ligaments may not have fully recovered, which made them prone to injury. This really underlines the importance of proper recovery.

one famous one i remember here a guy landed and broke his ankle and the bone shot out through the foot pad into the board.... soooo gross!

amongst those i know i can think of 3 broken necks (no spinal chord damage), a broken back, 6 or 7 ACLs, 2 or 3 shoulder reconstructions, and a pectoral muscle popped off the bone (hit by nose or fin of surfboard). Not too keen to go into some other things :-0

Training, the gym, workouts, weights and diet no doubt reduce your chance of injury. Also knowing your limits (eg based on your agility) - kiteboarding is a sport where it is fairly easy to huck a move and deal with the consequences -often absolutely fine - but sometime - not good...)

Also small steps and thinking out what you are doing - risk/reward - possibilities /consequences.

Finally - confidence.

I have been injured this last year worse than ever, and it sucks sooo bad. Get well soon injured kiters!
