Keros Limnos kitesurf, windsurfing spot review

Postby oceansprince » Mon Jul 24, 2017 3:14 pm

We had travelled to the island of Limnos and more specifically to Keros beach for holidays. However, what we found in this kitesurf, windsurf spot was completely unpredictable! It could have been characterized as the worst kitesurf spot ever. A 5 km beach full of seaweeds, while in half of this area of gusty winds, there had been illegal, absolutely crazy kite schools. Two kms were occupied by schools which are illegal since they are so expanded to the beach that they DONT ALLOW TO ANYONE KITE IN THEIR area unless you pay them. Not only this, but they are so spread out to each other, that there isn't enough space for tourists or visitors to get some water, except for their customers.. Their permission is up to 200m™area, while they extend it illegally to 3000m™

What about the rest of the beach?

The port police have already placed balloons in the water to keep the area closed and protect only 30 swimmers. This area extends to a distance of two kilometres on the beach, which is prohibited for kitesurfers as well as windsurfers . Port police are very strict on applying this law to both kitesurfers or windsurfers ignoring on the other hand those kite schools that force you to pay if you want to use some water or extend to their area.. We were 7 families with our babies and all of us needed umbrellas to protect ourselves from the sun . However, we were forced to kite far away, on a rocky, unprotected, without coffee-bars or umbrellas 200m beach area.Needless to say that all kitesurf, windsurf visitors were so disappointed..!! Personally, I felt really annoyed.

Now, about the wind.

All June round, there was ZERO WIND. At the beginning of July, strong winds started blowing, in kite schools area was so gusty, because they had chosen a specific erea, where the wind is offshore or side off. A wind, extremely gusty.. Even the owners and the instructors are aware of it . However they had chosen it on propose for their kite lessons , cause they need flat water to seems safe, but the beginners cannot understand why the kite falls down so often, so they think that it is their fault! At the end of the lessons when the beginners start to try alone without instructor, the schools exploit beginners, since the gusty wind forces the kite to fall down so they need help. At this point they charge 25 euro in order to rescue them using their boats ( the northern Bulgarian school charges €25, the Polish school €20 and the Greek school €15). The port police along with the schools don't cooperate well. As a result, the spot becomes less and less popular every year. They only allow a 200m rocky beach for kitesurfers , windsurfers. In this area the beach is very small and narrow, so there is not space enough for all these that travel there from far away, to come along with this crazy situation! The new Bulgarian school charges you 10 euro if you want to use water of their area.. so funny indeed! Me, along with my wife and our 3years old son had to walk along the whole beach asking "can we kite here?" and the answer was always "No! Unless you use our services."
For sure , Keros Beach is highly NOT recommended !!

So you are referring to the pinned location on the map. There seems to be a number of other bays (over 10kms worth) with similar facing coastlines and what looks like sandy beaches - is it not possible to kite anywhere else than where the kite schools and resort are? Or are there kite operators everywhere along that entire eastern side of the island?

Wtf oceansprince...

Come on tell us the truth.. they wont give you a spot to open your kiteschool right? Even I am not the bigget fan of Keros and Limnos, but I don't have so many bad things to say about it.

First of all kitesurfing is FREE all over Greece...someone might ask for money if you are to use some services of the kite schools such as water storage or their rescue. Maybe a big part of the beach is used for lessons but its only on the shore of the beach.. this happens on every organised beach...

The wind close to the school is gusty but the water is flat and super clear.. If you want more steady wind you will have to go down to the green zone, but the water there is choppy, but with some good small waves.

I think Limnos is a safe option.. cheap for families, very good food and a taste of Greece back in the '80s.

Limnos safe? :nono:

"Greece back in the '80s"? :nono:

guys do you know what you are talking about?
or are you just trying to sell something and then when people arrive there you take a slap in the face, because the truth is totally different?

come on, please let's try to keep our sport clean and honest for the pleasure to practice kitesurfing safely and happily and not shamelessly for profit of the business involved!

Are you for real? Have you ever visited Limnos?

If it’s cheap? You probably have never been to Paros or Naxos or Mykonos. Prices there are double than what they are in Limnos. You can just do a simple search for a place to stay through airbnb or booking.com. And of course lessons and rentals are much cheaper than the other islands.

If it’s safe? You have a big sandy beach with shallow waters and a rescue boat.. What else would you want?

As far as the 80’s - it’s nice to be in an area that is not your typical everyday environment. Meaning you are stuck in traffic in your ac car. Most people that live there use donkeys for their transportation. The island keeps a low, easy lifestyle.

In the below link you can see what you can expect.

Hello guys, back again to request information about the Greek island of Limnos.
I was checking the map and please see the photos I attach :?:

Does anyone know how's the situation of the bigger and supposedly better beach north of the famous kitesurfing-beach?

Is it possibile to kitesurf there (I don't care to have a school assistance neither of a house, because I am thinking to go there with a caravan)?
I think the wind is better (cleaner) and the bay is visibly larger with also that lake/lagoon in the back.

(I went to Keros beach years ago with my girl and without a car we had not visited around I would like to know how's the story today)

thanks a lot if you can give some suggestions :D

I asked a similar question near the beginning of this thread, but no one answered, maybe it's a big secret!!
Anyway I may be going there later this year so will reply back here if no one else does. If there's issues at the main kite spot I will try to explore some other options along the eastern coastline, looks like there are many suitable beaches.
