Can't reseat valve, any advice?

Postby KitingPolak » Sun Aug 27, 2017 5:42 pm

I had to replace a cracked valve on the small strut of my 2010 RRD Obsession. Purchased a "FixMyKite" replacement that looks like the original (see photo), the problem is that I can't get it to seat back in the strut hole. My fingers are raw from trying to press it in last night. There are no twists in the bladder but when I inflate it it does want to push the valve away from the leading edge ever-so-slightly. I tried to press it in without any air in the bladder, with some soapy water around the hole, and by inflating the bladder all with no luck. I'm concerned that if I pull too much on the nozzle I'll end up cracking it. Are there any tricks that I could try to get it to seat?

Dishwashing liquid on strut and lip of valve - set 1 corner first holding valve top and push up from underneath.
Work it round in a circle, dont try to seat it all at once.

I have had the same problem; I can't offer an easy solution though.

Try getting it in sideways instead of straight on (it isn't self-lubricating  ). You may need to force it. Just try to get part of the edge over and get the rest to follow.

Once your fingers are bleeding and you're seeing red, take a break, then get a small pair of scissors to delicately make a little cut on the side of the round hole in the LE.
This will not cause you LE to tear in half as long as you don't go past the stitching.
Then try again with the get an 'corner' over the edge and try to get the rest to follow.

It is remarkably painful to do, and wish to never have to do it again. I really don't know how people working in kite factories do.

you can pull hard on a new valve without cracking it. I will sometimes yank with my entire weight to pull it up. Old bladders can crack so you have to be real gentle on them but a brand new one can take a lot of pressure before it rips.

If you submerge the strut material/hole in a bucket of ice, it should make the material more pliable and the hole may widen slightly. Then work the valve through the hole while the material is still wet. Once the valve is in the hole, you can use a flat head screwdriver to help seat the material around the lip of the valve securely. Then let the material dry.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Going to wait until this evening to get feeling in my fingertips back before I give it another go. Was kind of hoping someone would say just leave it like that, it will be fine. ha ha

Loop a kite line around the valve and pull. See 4:15 on this video:

Is it twisting out when you inflate?

Use baby powder and dust it up good so it will slide inside when you are inflating. Also try to work it in place as you inflate. At least that is how I have solved this issue

2010?

Bin it...Or make a strutless kite. Very soon all valves will die and than what?

From a pic, the replacement one is different, it's missing the wide 'ring' which secured it in place. I would cut a strut fabric slightly to make it bigger. Otherwise, the fabric will cut in the valve too much...

I've got some awesome fuels from 2004-2006 that I ride all the time some kind of new old stock kites. Sure the valves failed, but one tube of 5200 red fast cure ($12) does at least a dozen valve resticks. Of course if you buy a new valve for each restick that's $15 times 13 = $195 hey that's still worth it for a kite that is otherwise in good shape from 2010. I also have a 2010 kite where none of the valves ever failed but I had to throw it away. One day I picked it up and my hand went right through the canopy. Talk about tissue paper. Anyway that's when you bin the kite. Valves can be fixed, pulleys can be fixed, lines can be fixed. As long as the canopy is in good condition just keep repairing it! Once the canopy goes though that's the end of a kite.

Anyway let us know when you get that valve problem settled.
