Best hurricane ultra high wind 40 plus knot kite

Postby toddsphresh » Sun Sep 03, 2017 3:12 am

Looking for advice on most stable ultra high wind 40plus knot kite. Was out the other day when it was blowing 50 mph and was comfortably lit on a borrowed 5.5 Best kahoona. Living in charleston and looking at our hurricane season coming up looks like I need to buy a solid 5 m kite. I like to go up
What is my safest cheapest option. I have 7 ion 3 that's good till 40izh it just can't take those 20 knot gusts very well. What do y'all reccomend.

Funny that you mentioned 5.5m Kahoona because it was one I rode last year in OBX on the day the eye of hurricane Matthew passed over the island. Bob rode 4.5m RPM. Scary "fun". I had to trim in a lot before heading out.
Too risky, don't do it,

i recon a 5 strut low aspect kite would be ultimate. I have 3 strut 6m reo which I can hold to 50 knots. I start trimming at 40 knots on the mutant. You have to pump in HARD or you can get the kite collapsing when loaded up hard.
I also have a 4m uno (mainly for hydrofoiling). I've foiled on that in 40 knot gusts and it was a piece of cake. But being only one strut it more easy to collapse by over loading it.

4 meter RRD Religion. Or the 5 meter. Rock solid, canopy very stable.

How predictable are hurricane winds?

Then a 5 meter should be fine. Have had it out in 38 to 50 knots, no issues. A well-balanced kite will handle gusts as well. Just don't try and jump.

Well, I didn't, but maybe I'm getting old :-)

Take a look at the fluid kiteboarding ATV i ve been riding storm for years now and been developing this kite be able to handle insane gusts and very strong wind.

We have developed something called f tech which is a dacron framework that holds the kite in shape at all times. This will give you much more control and a much less bumpy ride in gusty conditions

Genetrix Hydra V7 7m. It holds to 55knots easy, taking my 9m to 45knots.

9m to 45 knots and 7m to 55knots?? How much do you weigh? How was the wind speed measured?

I weigh 195 pounds and go to 7m Naish Pivot at 25 knots, and 6m Best Cabo at 30. Seldom kited much above 30, which is usually the highest we get here in Illinois, or Cape Hatteras outside of storms, or in Cape Town in the summer. We had one spring day here a couple years ago when when it really blew hard, perhaps to 40 knots and our best kiter was lit on his son's 3.5m Best Kahoona. I've only ridden a 5m a couple of times, in Cape Town late in the day on a strong SEaster when the sand is blowing head high on the beach, and in extreme frontal winds in Cape Hatteras. None near 40 knots that I am aware of. Anything in that range, especially with the gusts associated with tropical storms, would be too risky for me. But then I'm 61.
