I'll get flack for this, but I'm considering driving to Northern Florida for some kiting ahead of Irma, then moving up to OBX as it goes. I missed out on Matthew last year even though I happened to be in Florida for a conference, because I caught a bug there. This time I have a kidney stone, but might go anyway.

I live in South Tampa and work at USF. We got the confirmation today that the university will be closed Thur and Friday to prepare. Locally, its been a bit of a madhouse. As expected, everyone is filling up on gas, grabbing water by the gallons, and ransacking non-perishables. My girlfriend and I have decided to stay with several contingency plans mapped out including a full evac if needed. The modeling is shaping up with fair confidence that the storm will run east of us but I will not assume anything until Saturday. While this is favorable for us its scary for many other parts of Fl so we should all be on alert. Should be interesting.

Keep your eye on the traffic. The roads will be nuts heading North. Check google maps or download a traffic app.

@EricHolthaus - Hurricane #Irma expected to bring 5-10ft storm surge and 1-2ft of rain to South Florida—a catastrophe.
Peak impacts Saturday-Sunday-Monday.

In the final moments when you go lay down in a bath tub don't forget your shotgun. Just in case a shark knocks on the window. Boom!!!

Wow that's horrible. I feel bad for those people in Florida, I hear the roads are jammed up right now and everyone is stuck on the highways.

It makes me feel really unsafe to live in Hawaii. But I guess that's the price you have to pay to live in a beautiful place
