Reinforce/repair canopy

Postby ArneB » Mon Sep 25, 2017 11:07 am

Just a brain fart, but here it goes anyway:

The trailing edge of my old kite is getting worn because of all the flapping etc.
Would it be possible to glue (with Aquasure or similar) a second strip of canopy on top of it.
Then (if necessary) some zig-zag stitches around the edges.

So just on the areas that look the worst.

Would this be worth the effort? Or better to fly until it rips and than repair or bin.

Hold the kite up to the sunlight and look along the entire trailing edge. If it does have wind damage you can see the extent. If you only have damage in a small spot then yeah sure it's worth fixing proactively. Usually though there is so much damage you would end up having to patch the entire kite and in that case you are better off letting it go until it rips. It's a judgement call based on the amount of damage. I fly my kites until I can push my finger through the canopy like a wet piece of tissue, so my opinion is never bin it until it doesn't fly.

I've done an entire trailing edge with sail repair tape after it started disintegrating. Have held up so far and definitely extended the life of the kite.
