Helmets on eBay $20

Postby unclebill » Tue Sep 26, 2017 2:42 am

Does anyone know anything about helmets from China on eBay for $20 shipping included. I was thinking they might be junk but then everything comes from there anyway.

Why don't you try one and get back to us. See if you can get some $20 lines while you're at it. Seriously though, why even chance it.

Helmets are just a novelty anyway.

If you don't want to trust your helmet, save $20 and don't buy one.

If safety is a concern to you and you feel you need to wear a helmet, buy a proper one.
Don't compromise on safety.

A proper helmet has EPS crush foam and is one use. However most water helmets are EVA, Brock Foam because they are built with the idea of low speed repeated impacts at the wakeboard park, not the high speed impact with your head on the ground which happens kiteboarding on a botched launch or landing. Just my opinion. Once you are on the water, you don't really need a helmet but the head is a convenient place to store your helmet when you are not launching or landing the kite. Unlike most other water sports our highest risk is not while we are out kiteboarding but while we are on land so our helmet protection should reflect this and be based on the kind of helmet design you would use on impact with land not with impact on the water. If I think back on the most dangerous things I have seen, one thing most have in common is some kind of unintentional kiteloop (wingtap wrap, bar wrap, line fouling) that puts the kiter on land in a powered loop.

There is no safety when dangling on a 25m ultra thin lines. There is only a false feeling of safety. In the rare situations it might help tho.
