Advice please: Do you regularly jump over 12m?

Postby kjorn » Wed Sep 27, 2017 11:17 pm

Hi,

I'm stuck jumping around 10m, I have had some special days when I've hit 12m a few times and 14m once.

Regarding technique I think I'm doing OK, I can do about 10m off the flat on a super good day. I can do 10m off a wave most good sessions.

What should I upgrade, kite or board?

I'm riding: 12m Mutiny P, 10m Epic screamer, 8m torch, 7m chaos. Board is Cabrinha Tronic 2014

I like C shaped kites, I've tried Ozone Edge and didn't get on with it. It felt kinda weird. I've owned RRD Obsession which was OK, but I prefer a more C style of kite.

I never unhook. I rarely do any tricks. I enjoy going as fast as I can and jumping big. I kite in the gusty, rainy UK.

thanks :)

I'd say start by trying to refine as much of your technique as possible. Film yourself jumping and see if there are any modifications needed. Post it online for feedback (i'll probably do the same soon). My boosting isnt all that great (stuck around 20 to 25ft) but what did help me a bit was when I friend of mine recommended slowing down and pushing a bit with my front foot to get as much of the board as possible in the water. There is a killer video on boosting you may want to check out - https://vimeo.com/ondemand/learningtoflyepisodeone

As far as gear, I'd probably swap out one of your kites before the board. If you like fast turning C type kites maybe consider something like a Cab FX, Naish Pivot, or something that is a hybrid of sorts. It really comes down to demo'ing as much as possible. Only then will you really know what's best for you.

Happy to hear more from the pros.

I was lucky to be on a kite trip recently with a pro kite photographer (he was on a holiday). During a discussion around technique (and me grovelling over his laptop pic's) we got onto boosting, the short story was...... Generally the pros are hitting around 12 meters on flat water consistently. Obviously there's the odd extra nodal lift, small chop kickers and perfect timing (gives them a little more). However nobody is going to boost 20m+ from the flats consistency. So I guess, don't be so hard on yourself.

Having said that, if you did change boards I'd be surprised you couldn't get an extra 2m ish off the flats. Tronic is longer for width, narrower in the tips. If you kept that same surface area but shortened the board, you essentially can load that area in a smaller arc (board turns tighter). Once you adjust to the timing your new PB's would be around the corner.

HD video, some jump measuring device and a dirty kite destroying pole of known length. Best way to pick which board boosts highest.

HF is the future for CONSISTENT big air off choppy flat water.
you can go big in much less wind, comparing to twintip.
It's like bringing your own kicker with you.
Sure you'll still go higher on twintip during a hurricane.. but how often do you get those conditions?

C kites boost well but in gusty location is not that great ,
try Naish Park HD or Dash . Pivots are free ride kites . I think you need free style kite but not C .
Boosting on foil kites you will go higher but its sketchy on windy days . Land it pack it up in 25 k wind its a mess!

Try other kites and go out overpowered

Ride overpowered. If you can walk on the beach put a bigger kite up. Seat harness. Edge as hard as possible before leeting loose to gain speed right before wave kicker Send it leAve kite at 11 or 1 until past Apex. Loop it on the way down repeAt
