Board Graphic Delaminating.

Postby LiquidXtasy » Wed Nov 08, 2017 12:25 am

I got this board and the graphics are starting to peel off on 3 corners. Would it work if I used some surfboard ding repair kit to glue it back together? Here is the stuff I was thinking about using. Also, do I need to sand anything or can I just glue it back and clamp it down?

If I was fixing that I would use liquid epoxy, like Resin Research resin, which is UV stable and will be clear and not turn brown in the sun. Idon;t know anything about that stuff you have and what it might look like or how thick it is, so it might be OK, but I doubt it will be very good.

I would sand both surfaces with maybe a 200 grit or so paper, to give the resin something to mechanically bond to. Wipe with acetone or alcohol maybe, but make sure it does not make colours run before you do too much pf that. Just glue one corner at a time, so you can maybe improve your technique as you find out what does or does not work. You will want to clamp it down, maybe some clamps or weight placed on it, possibly between wood to distribute the load. Put some clear packing tape on the board surfaces you don't want hardened epoxy on because it will leak out. Epoxy won;t stick to plastic, so putting plastic around it will contain the mess and stop you from having wood stuck to your board after. Also if you want to get the resin right into the edge of where it is coming apart either use a long blade, or cut a piece of beer can and use that to help work the resin into the end of the crack without having to pull it even further apart.

Hope that helps!
Peter

If that Mondo stuff says FIBERFILL, don't use it to glue down laminates. You will never get it to sit flat. That stuff is intended to fill cracks and holes. It's pretty good for quick repairs of that nature.

What do you suggest I use then?

A liquid epoxy as Peter suggested.

I would use a silane modified polymer glue.

Nah the plastic sheet actually has significant mechanical properties.. tensile strength.. to add to the glass - the stuff comes with a material properties data sheet. If you flame treat it then clean it off with acetone you will get a better bond... Even use a lighter if you don't have a gas torch.. you don't melt / burn it.. you just make sure the yellow bit of the flame touches the bond surface. Then epoxy.

Rough sand with 60 or 80 grit first.. as said .. additional mechanical bond...
