The best boosting kites. Your real world testing :)

Postby kjorn » Mon Nov 13, 2017 5:30 pm

Lets see how all the different kites are boosting. Post your results here, big or little jumps, let's get an idea of how the kites work in the real world used by real people (not these pro-kiter freaks.) I'm interested in older kites as well, are there any old gems out there?

The rules:

1. Kite details
2. Board size. Boots or straps?
3. Best boost (PIQ, Woo or xensr)
4. Boosts you'd expect to do on a good day
5. How long have you been kiting
6. Do you like the kite?

1. 10m Epic Screamer not sure of the year, 2012 i think
2. Cabrinah Tronic
3. 11.5m
4. 10m
5. 15 years
6. Like the kite. Its really hard to boost over 10m on it. It starts ripping you off the edge... not enough depower (compared to a vegas)

Not a crack yet but my input:
1. Cabrinha switchblade 2016 10m and 2017 7m
2. Lieuwe shotgun 136/140
2a. I'm 88kg
3. 8.6m on a piq
4. 7m and up
5. since end of september 2016, jumping since march this year.
6. I like them but i dont have much experience with other kites. Tried the Harlems few weeks back and while underpowered I jumped 8m so i liked them a lot too.

If you really interested in these stats, get a woo app (free), create a login and browse activity section, or daily leaderboards.
Most people would specify the gear they used and under what conditions.
From what I have seen there, most small kites can go big on a windy day (not many 0-1 strut wave kites entries, but all others are well represented).
plenty of Edges, XRs, Bandits, Switchblades, Rebels, TS, etc
Now, to go big in under 15kts, one has to be on race foil/foil setup.. or so it seems from the woo leaderboards and session descriptions.

as to my own boosting, I was able to get 14m (per woo) on 9m Xr3, 9m Edge, but I am pretty sure if I was given a bandit, rebel or switchblade, I'd do about the same..
the board is 132 Raptor

I'm baffled as to how people get such high jumps on larger kites.. my biggest jumps are always on my 7m. On my 10m Evo I can't seem to top about 11m high even when very overpowered.

I have recently tried the new Ozone Edge. That thing takes you to another stratosphere.

Favorite boosting kites:

1. Zian Hantu 9m 2016
2. 138 Best Armada, Strapped
2a. 92kg
3. 11.1m on Woo2.0
4. 9-10m and rising :)
5. Since 2015
6. I really like the kite but I´m keen to get to know other similar 3-strut allrounders like e.g. the Enduro.

Edit.: I´m not willing to change to a real "boosting" kite like the Edge or Rebel since I´m also very much into Kiteloops :D

lol you should have put a wind range in those stats.
I think main thing to boost over 10/12 m is you need to be quite powered. like more than 25 knots on 12m, more than 35 knots on 9m, more than 40 knots on 7m.
Some dude just did 22m jump in France flat water spot i think wind mid 40 gusting 50 or more, on 7m.

what's zian hantu, googled it but looks like it just came out.

I am same as you move to C kite to learn kiteloop but now that I have technique right I am considering getting maybe some hybrid to get a bit more hangtime and less bar pressure. I don't think i would like the feel of a boosting kite though, I like too much how the power builds up when you send it.

1) best GP 9m
2) i think my record was more than one year ago so on fone trax 135 carbon but I have nobile fifty/50 which is a bit slower now.
3) 12m
4) 10m: my good day is 25 knots on 9m so not super powered but fun for kiteloop. I wish there was more wind ;(
5) late 2014

for boosting big, I think the best GP 9m really need more that 35 knots, in 30 knots I don't really get yanked up, it's still pretty smooth.
Since I have been working on kiteloop I rarely go out super powered, should be rigging my 12m more often but having more fun on 9m medium power. I am kind of missing the powered session, maybe I should just get a 10 or 11. not sure, I feel like I haven't had any 30+ session in more than one year ;(

star sirius 12m
Once I went out with 12m in 15knots and wind went up quickly to 45 knots. boosted when it was in upper 20 before I bailed out, woo didn't register jump I kind of got lofted mid jump, was probably one of my biggest boost.
I think I go about 10m on 25 knots day. but rarely go out with 12m in those condition.

nick jacobsen 26.7 meters 9m Cabrinha FX 2017, in sep 2016 woo
phil morstad 21.2m 9m north rebel 2015 in jul 2015 woo
lewis crathern 19.4m during red bull king of the air 2017 pretty sure he was on a north vegas, maybe a 9m?
naish torch 9m can also give you a 19+ meter jump, I remember seeing it scoring well in red bull king of the air 2016

What's the common characteristic of high jumping kites? No idea. You tell me. Maybe get a few more kites that have scored in the 19m+ range that we can add to the sort list I have above.
