Agreed - looks like a cut. Possibly something sharp on the launch landing zone. In our area small zebra mussel shells are like mini razor blades.
Always best to launch and land your kite in the water. As well I don't like letting anyone land my kite. Some people don't know how to handle a kite with respect and drag the kite across the beach while they flip it over and then slam it down. I often see this where a kiteboarder wants to blame the manufacturer for his/her own neglect. Careful not to point fingers - or sometimes you will have 3 fingers pointing back at you.

OP: This story is missing a lot of detail for anyone to judge what is happening, but I have never seen dacron fail without there being an external force applied. If the kite is new and it fails on seams I think this discussion would be different, but in the middle of a material and no solid information I think you'd have a hard time trying convince anyone that this is manufacturing errors. Especially on a kite that is several years old. I've ridden a lot of Naish kites, and never had something just blow up.

Only an opinion. The rip is not straight along the warp. The section just left of centre is were the damage initiated and then traveled along the fabric both directions from the ends of the damage. It could have been a crash, but you would have said so. It is possible that the "cut" area was not seen, possibly trapped in the zipper of the bag, or crushed in a car door, or in an airport carousel, or.... all it needs is for a fold to be compressed for a weak spot to be created.
Having said all that, the repair looks quite easy to do.

exactly what happened to my buddy's kite while I "landed" it on a sea shell...
I went to the next bank took out way too much cash and payed for the kite, I live by you break you buy.

my advice to your friend: repair or get another kite. is it majorly annoying? yes. but better than running around telling people "I attach the hose to the kite, let go of the pump handle and next thing you know the damn thing blows up!! I know right!!!"

:bye:

PS: I had the italian mob take care of that shell all night...

Its a simple repair. Patch the leading edge, put a new bladder in and move on.

LOL

Are you for real? Must be joking, right?

That is not a simple repair. If you apply a patch to that, no matter how good the patch is, it will pop again, I can guarantee it.

It will need to be professionally repaired and you'd need to remove the two contact patches on either side and remove the stitching along the seems to be able to even get to the panel in a manner for it to be sewn back in place.

Trust me, even a KiteFix glue job on that will not work.

Probably under a $100 repair being restitched, new bladder and it will be good to go.

If only you were in Cape Town. Paul Lagesse at Second Wind Sails would fix it perfectly for a fair price. Wish we could clone him!

I think it's the power from the explosion of the bladder that rips the dacron. My friend`s Park 2012 exploded when pumped (image).
